Great progress you've made there! We bump into each other (not literally) now and again. A few of us do the Autosolos and I marshall at Combe on occasions, where I get to see Howard embarrassing some quite expensive cars with his very quick lap times! Get yourself along to Bristol Motor Club, the MX5 challenge should appeal, and a very reasonably priced Llandow track day runs every year - I really should get along to one, maybe this year? Next club meeting is on Tuesday at Almondsbury - not sure Grandad taxi duties will enable me to attend but they're a friendly bunch of motor enthusiasts from all disciplines. my.bristolmc.org.uk/

More tinkering, there was a slight hickup in the revs which has become much more apparent since the timing mod. So new coil pack, ignition cables and plugs... Old cables had completely corroded inside in coil connections, surprised it was running so smoothly before! Now it's running nice and smooth. New issues, lights won't pop up, seems the stick switch is gone, going to dismantle and clean before buying a new one

Ok question time...
None of the induction kits I've seen really look very good as far as getting cold air into the engine or they're just really expensive.
However the stock one seems to needlessly go round and round in circles!
Looking the the image here I've removed the extra ubends of plastic and just routed the flexi hose over to the far right where is was previously taking the air from over the wing. Still no cold air here!!!
What I've noticed is there is a massive space under the airbox down through the engine bay, where I have put the arrow!
Is there any reason the simply routing a hose from underneath would be a bad idea? This car never gets driven in the wet so no issue with sucking up water...
Any thoughts

That does look a bit convoluted - the one most people see as the best strategy is the Jackson Racing intake, which goes into a hole in the panel above the bulkhead and draws air from under the windscreen (probably need to relocate the washer bottle). Mine has a cone filter that cuts out your two u-turns, but it's still sitting right above the exhaust. Haven't done anything with mine as I'm planning to go ITB soon so will probably do a half-size radiator and channel the air through the front, something like this.

I'm in Bristol Charlie, happy to meet up and bore you with endless advice The Jackson racing intake draws in cold air from in front of the radiator like this: They're not made for the 1.8 anymore, I bought mine second hand from Crumpets on here. Prior to this, I made a cowl intake that draws cold air from the high pressure area in front of the windscreen. Probably not suitable for your car as the abs pump will be in the way:

Think I'm going to try my DIY idea first then maybe upgrade in time.
I would be very much up for a meet up to kick tyres and chat cars!

So more little updates... Looks like when the timing mod was done they didn't change the cam sensor gasket, and so it started leaking quite alot. Bit of a tlc under the bonnet, fitted a new cam sensor gasket, but the cam cover gasket keeps leaking although it's new, on investigation when it was fitted looks like the garage didn't use a Mazda official one and didn't clean the contact points or apply any sealant at the cam corner bits. I also noticed the master clutch cylinder was leaking, so new master, slave and ss short line fitted, the fluid that came out was like lumpy gravey! Removed the carbon fuel line vapour filter and generally cleaned and tidied the engine bay up a bit as well can spending two days meticulously cleaning and painting the came cover. Obligatory before and after...
