So hypothetically, you've got a turbo MX5 that's worth more in parts than it is as a whole car and Vauxhall that you need to shift. Combined you'd be looking at roughly 5k.
Family car duties are covered elsewhere, so you need a 4 seater fun car, that's safe, because the Mazda has no air bags and is referred to fondly as the "death trap" or "tin can" - all hypothetical of course.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Clio 197/200, Type R FN2,?

My vote would be for my daily, essentially a golf R32 but much cheaper and doesn't look dated.
Audi A3 3.2 V6, cheap to buy, pay £2k for a new chain, change oil every 5k and the new chain will last forever.
Bought mine for 3k (89k), paid for new chain 2k, she's now sitting on 185k miles, no issues, only maintenance has been oil changes and two new rear wheel bearings
As long as you keep the maintenance up on the dsg and haldex it should last forever!

She's a thing of beauty imho, ok I've spent some money on big brakes and alloys, but you don't need to!

Thanks both, I've been doing some research and come up with the following list so far: - Mini Cooper S - Fiesta ST - Clio 197/200 - Civic Type R FN2
I've had a couple A3's in the past so not looking to scratch that itch again, hadn't looked at Tailgate McNoIndicate's, will have a look and see what you can get - maybe it's an option as well.
- Tailgate McNoIndicate 130i - Subaru of some variety? - Suzuki Swift Sport?
Anyway, I think 4 seats with maybe 5 doors would be preferable.

I think on paper, they might have estimated that a little low to generate interest, interesting to see what it goes for though. New criteria, ideally a 5 door, so that changes things a little. I'm struggling to come up with much that'll achieve everything:
Fun 5 Door 5-7k
I've got 130i, CooperS Clubman - although these might be too small.
Open to suggestions.

I still miss mine! Is 250miles to a tank about right for one of those? Very very tempting, harder to justify. I think a Hawkeye estate might be an option, but finding a decent example in budget might be a challenge. I'm not sure how they wear their miles - lots of examples nearing 100k.

I used to get at least 300 miles to a tank, about 30 mpg. Mine was a blobeye (2.0) but with a bigger turbo, injectors etc. You'd want to watch out for the tax rates on hawkeyes, maybe it's different for UK cars but on imports after 2006 the tax is now £695 or something crazy.
Usual wear and tear stuff applies for cars over 100k miles, or 20 years, as with our Mazdas, but generally bulletproof, as with our Mazdas. Suspension bushes etc (and rust obvs) would be the main things to look out for. Engine-wise it would be standard - quality of maintenance is more important than actual miles done.

Wow, I didn't even know road tax went that high! Having a look into Focus ST Estates, which is maybe slightly off piste!

Yeah was keeping an eye on it, stated it had some rust on the arches but I couldn't see it in the pictures.
