So went off for a ride, nice day, hot, blue sky. Was actually the wife that mentioned going for a ride. Came up to a stop sign and all of a suden belching gray/brown smoke coming from the rear left wheel. Looked like I was going on fire. The wheel was boilling hot and smoking away. Emptied 2 bottles of water on it which stopped the smoke. Other 3 wheels perfectly cold. Waited for about an hour for things to cool down and drove home very slowly.
I haven' taken the wheel off yet but here are some questions: Do you think the OEM 15' BBS wheel took a beating from the heat? I'm guessing the brake got stuck so do you think, because of all the smoke and heat, the caliper is still any good. Pads are only 3 weeks old.
Any advise welcome, especially about what to look for/test and then change

Caliper not sliding on the pins or piston stuck.
I doubt very much if the wheel has been harmed, it’s happened to me a couple of times on the front without doing anything to the wheel.
Your pads will be cooked though…

I have had a stuck piston on the rear which made the disc glow to a dull cherry red. I fitted new calipers and pads after that. Check your disc for cracks after throwing water onto it !! The Wheel should be none the worse for its adventure.

well took the rear left apart. maybe a slight blue tint on the disc ... caliper slides good, pads look almost new, flex hose looks in good shape (very slightly can be compressed), handbrake cable loose, the handbrake cable pivot pivots. I really don't see what could have gone wrong. I'm going to rebuild everything anyway. new discs, pads, brake lines, bearings, rebuild the calipers. gonna play safe. don't like the idea of potential smoking brakes (especially if my wife takes the car)

How about the piston in the caliper, that’s what caused my problem, it only needs to stick slightly to keep the pad against the disc, then it all gets worse as things heat up and expand.

Well, while I was taking things apart I did use the handbrake a few times, (took 2 hours to get the RL shaft nut off...), at one point the RL hub wouldn't turn anymore, checked the RR side and no problem there. Checked the HB cable, loose when off, tight when on but no lever movement on the caliper! Nudged it and the hub turned again. There's the problem! Every so often that lever was getting stuck. Going to rebuild every thing anyway so I'll have a fresh start on both rear hub assemblies. Kind of reassuring to know what the issue was...

If the cable isn't adjusted properly and the handbrake is pulled hard, the handbrake mechanism inside the caliper sticks on as it seems to run out of travel and then binds...
