I'm navigating over Epynt on may 5th so on a crash-diet Rich. no Mx5 content from me BUT lots of hillclimbing (did see an NA @ service area) but 34th o/a & 3rd in class (1401-1600cc) in a mk2 Escort with a 1599cc crossflow engine (that has a striking resemblance with a Cosworth Bda ) Rich.

Hi Rich. The driver told me it could have been an easy first …. If you’d laid of the buns.
Rich.

First event of the season for me yesterday, HCAAC sprint at Debden, near Stansted airport. In class A3 (up to 1600cc, 2WD, list 1A or 1B tyres) there was me, an NB 1.6 with ITBs, launch control etc, a Lotus Cortina and and Lancia Fulvia. We had a convoy run, then 1 practice, then 3 timed runs, and I was top of the timesheets in all of them except the 2nd time run where I had a spin. Ended up 4 seconds clear of the NB, though he had some engine trouble (suspected thrown rod) and dropped out after run 2. The Lotus Cortina was 16 seconds back, and the Lancia got (wrongly) dumped into the 'all comers' class and went home in a huff.
Was great to be back on the road and doing events, last time I drove it properly was October!!

Out again yesterday at North Weald, only two in my class, with Bob in his Lotus Cortina as usual. I was 3 seconds quicker, but would still rather take his car home any day of the week!
Oil burning is getting worse, it's not just for the first few miles after startup anymore and was producing a kind of smoke screen for everyone. Going to attack it with some toluene and see if I can get the rings to free up, and if not, will get the NB engine ready to fit.

Yeah, I've checked the PCV valve and the other breather hose and none of the external stuff is blocked. I haven't looked at the 'orifice valve' on the exhaust side yet.
Don't suppose it would be anything in the cam cover labyrinth stuff? I could swap another cam cover on to eliminate that. Anything else I'd need to look at?

try isolating the inlet manifold from the camcover - run the camcover / pcv outlet to a bottle & see if / how much is vented? this will stop oil burning / smoke from exhaust IF it's due to the pcv and also show how much its breathing Rich.

Out at North Weald again yesterday. This time there were five cars in class A3 (road-going 2WD up to 1600cc), and mine was the youngest! 1969 Lancia Fulvia Rallye, 1969 TVR Vixen, 1966 Lotus Cortina, and 1935 Riley TT Sprite. On a slightly shorter course than last time, ended up about 2 seconds quicker than the Lotus Cortina, and all of my four timed runs were within half a second of each other. Two of them identical, to the hundredth. So either I've maxed out the car and my performance, or need to think of some different lines! It's an old airfield with a pretty rough surface and lots of bumps so any suspension/tyre pressure changes didn't make any material difference. Next event is a weekend at Gurston Down on 3/4 August, howardb66 is there too. We're both in the Sevenoaks invited class, which won't help me get points and I'll be 4th at best behind Howard, a supercharged V8 Jag F-type and a Caterham. Suppose I could pray for rain but that will just make the camping muddy!

Thought I’d give the 7Oaks championship a go. 🙂 Was a bit of a last minute choice as had a room in the local pub booked & thought I might as well do Gurston this year, hope to improve on my previous 38.01secs. Also got Goodwood & Debden in September.

Excellent, I'm down for Goodwood in Sept as well, not Debden yet but probably will. Have Hethel on 8 Sep and then going to Wales for the weekend of 14/15 so need to earn some more brownie points before I can entertain a second full weekend on car things...
