Help!
Did about 7 hours of motorway driving yesterday, in two stints of about 3.5 hours.
Felt like it was suffering hesitation/misfiring the whole way, but I am certain that is the core pack arcing out and needing to be changed. (I have one in a 'safe place', haha)
On the way back, something smelt... hot? burny? It was hard to pin down if it smelt of hot rubber, burning oil or something else, and I was overtaking most other things so it wasn't a vehicle I was following.
Nursed it for the last half an hour and kept an eye on all the gauges as it was not very happy and the smell wasn't shifting.
Went for a brief burst of overtake off a roundabout near home and, er, got smoke rising from the gearstick / centre console area...!
Pulled over to look under the bonnet. Coil pack seemed fine, HT leads looked good (and are new), nothing touching the exhaust, fluids looked good, no obvious cabling problems or other damage to anything.
I did have the clutch/flywheel done fairly recently, though, and the gearbox shaft seal done as part of that.
So...
Would I be correct in thinking that I could have an oil leak in the box, that is getting super-hot after extended use and then burning/smoking off on the inside of the hot bell housing?
I guess I should check the gearbox oil level as the garage I'd need to take it back to is about 100 miles away, but I don't have a flat driveway and I don't know if there are ramps to hire nearby...
Any suggestions/thoughts very gratefully received, thank you!!

Have you checked the turret oil (underneath the gearstick, access from the cabin)? It's separate from the main gearbox oil and must be there for a reason, I would imagine if it's running dry then what's left would get pretty hot after a long run.

That is a good point. I'm not sure if the garage refilled/topped it up after doing the clutch change so will have to get handy with the tools... (be scared lol) Thinking about it, I do appear to have an oil leak under the car around the gearbox area... so I think I will get it booked in again - I know he will love dropping the box again lol

Otherwise since you've had work done on the gearbox/clutch/seals changed and if this was your first long drive since, it's possible some residual oil is getting heated up, or I suppose possible that the replaced seal has failed. There is a weep hole on the bottom of the bellhousing you could inspect to see if anything's coming out there.

Whatever goes on your exhaust goes up there if the grommet around the lever is cracked.

It was an Mazda seal so most annoying if it has not seated correctly! Thanks for the weep hole advice, I will try to get underneath this weekend or at least attempt to get a camera near it to check it I did look at Youtube videos for gearbox oil drain/replacement - it looks pretty simple, two bolts and all that, but getting access without ramps is the issue and I don't have a pump-and-tube thing to even just top up what I do have until it comes out the filler hole... lol (assuming I could get to the filler bolt and get it undone!) I can drive around 'character' in cars, but I can't drive around a gearbox that's seized itself into a solid lump of metal through heat and lack of lubrication... so hopefully it will survive the 100 mile trip to my usual garage!

Whatever goes on your exhaust goes up there if the grommet around the lever is cracked. Interesting... I've yet to take the interior apart to check the turret oil (I suspect it has been empty for a long time! lol) so will need to find an 'exploded diagram' of the arrangement to check what I'm looking at / what might be wrong.

Rocker gasket leaking oil onto the exhaust, smoke entering cabin via split gearshift gator?
I hope this doesn’t become another head gasket event… Although… they do leak oil around the rear of the head near the dipstick if the headgasket has failed..

It's dead easy, have a look at this vid:
