This weekend I spent the day sprinting at Curborough, and it seems everyone has a camera set up on their roll bar. It looked cool being able to look back over your lap/upload to YouTube.
However I don't have loads of cash, and don't want to pay GoPro prices.
Any recommendations for a (cheaper) alternative?

Has anyone used a SJCAM 4000/5000? Any good?

I have an SJCAM M10, in fact I have 2. This was shot with one of them.

The picture looks good (as does the price!) How easy do you find using it? I've read that the SJCAM interface isn't very good.

I had a GoPro Hero2 before and it's probably easier to use than that was. No idea what the newer GoPros are like. To be honest my GoPro died after a couple of years and not that much use so I was damned if I was giving them any more of my money for what felt like a pretty poorly made product. These SJCAMs are so cheap if they break or you loose one after 6 months you just buy another.
Th only downside over the GoPro is no external mic input and I really miss having a flashing light not the front to tell me it's running.

I've got an sj4000, seems fine in terms of quality, has a car mode so it runs when you turn the car on (assuming it's plugged in). It came with a good array of fixing brackets too. Good value imo. It didn't have any sort of editing software (as far as I could tell), but YouTube has some tools built in and there are basic free programmes too I believe...

Looks like a good option then! And at that price I can get more than one.
Cerberus had a three camera setup (One on his rollcage, one mounted on the front bumper and a rear facing camera). The video he put together and uploaded looked really good - and something to aim for!

One of my friends has an SJ4000 and it doesn't take good video, framerate is low and white balance is poor, gopro seems to have the quality and accessories backup.
I have a Sony action cam that puts out similar quality to go pro, i bought as I preferred it's form factor but not being compatible with gopro bits and pieces is annoying as it has the widest support.
I can probably post up vids of samples from both at the same event if you want to see what I mean.
Edit - here is a video from both, the hood maybe impacting his video but have seen vids from other events it's not the greatest, he is looking at replacing with gopro or something.

The quality of the more expensive cameras is going to be better, hence why they're 2 or 3 times the price. But it depends what you want it for, if it's just a bit of fun cataloguing a track day is it worth spending loads? Only you can decide. One of my friends had a Sony and I did like the fact that you can download content straight to an iPad to watch them in the pub afterwards.

www.chilli-tech.com/action-camerasive had one of these for the last 3 years. I think it was about £100 in 2 stick on mounts and a head strap. Not the most advanced but it takes footage and is pretty robust. A few months back they had a deal on at £35 each, wish i bought a couple then as well. D

Whilst I do agree you can get by with cheaper, it depends on what you want it for, James who owns that SJ wanted to do a head to head with my video to see where he was 2 secs slower on a solo, on comparing the vids he actually looked faster as his camera was not taking an accurate representation of his run, so whilst you might want it for simple trackday vids, perhaps see how quick you were, it was not very useful at the basics. Though perhaps some might like a camera that makes them look quicker than they are

Though perhaps some might like a camera that makes them look quicker than they are That is probably not a bad idea after my last two trackdays/sprints at Hethel and Curborough!! There is definately alot of options and alternatives to GoPros. Time to do some searches on YouTube and decide. Cheers for the help evryone!

Sj4000 Sony Sandys, how are you mounting your gopro in the Mk3? Im working on a 3d printed mount that will put the gopro about there so I'd be interested to see how you do it. Mine looks a bit like this (its changed a couple generations since this)

I just bought another windbreak and got the dremel out, but can do this as the Sony is small and has camera screw on the bottom. So I just switch it in and out as needed.

Interesting ... I'd decided the windbreak was too wobbly but it looks like your video is nice and stable ...
