Hi welshy,
can you clarify where we stand with decats? Am I right in thinking there are two angles here, import and age?
Cheers.

Hi welshy, can you clarify where we stand with decats? Am I right in thinking there are two angles here, import and age? Cheers. Pretty clear on the regs. uk spec cars anything built before september 92 doesnt need a cat for emissions as its tested on a non cat test. There is arguments over the legality of failing the mot on not having a cat even if it doesnt need a cat test but you be hard done by to be even picked up on. Anything after that will be tested on a cat test which most decated mx5 will fail. Imports gets tricky on this but from what ive found out anything built before july/august 95 has a non cat test anything over will be a cat emission test. Imports are genuinly not a well covered area and many testers wont now the difference as they have never had them through the workshop. If you get pulled over by plod and found to have a decat then you can be fined however the chances of this is extremely unlikely as most cops dont know what they are talking about half the time. If a tester does come across a car that has a decat on and believe it should have a cat they have to gain reliable source to find out if the car did come with a cat which takes time a tester doesnt have so most just ignore it specially on diesels as cat doesnt make a bit of difference to a diesel smoke test. But keep the cat just in case for the mot.

I wish i could but not a tester myself however the plan is in the pipe line to have a mot testing as part of a business within a few years. Any help just post below.

What are the fairly new rules to do with seat adjustment? If a seat has an adjuster it must work as it was made in the factory however ive yet to see a car that has been failed on it. If the car has been modified ie fixed seat with no adjuster it cant be failed has it has no adjuster. Stuff like rallycars/track cars have certain section which means things which should fail ie missing air bags can be passed if shown the car has been modified for competition use. Hope that helps.

My MOT man is pretty easy going, so I'm not envisaging a problem with a bucket seat on rails.
With regards to import emissions and a decat, I believe the magic pass number is 3.5% for CO2 - my car with a decat, throttle bodies and a rich idle passes at about 1.3% every year.
