Here is my mx5 which is kind of a work in progress and used purely for fun and soon to be track car.
I bought it in September 2014 on ebay for £500, the description was terrible and the paint looked orange but I liked the spec so put a few bids in. When I turned up the car was in much better condition than the advert would have had me believe so I was over the moon to hand over the cash and drive home with the top down
(The day I picked it up)
It is a UK 1.8 in basic spec so no PAS, electric windows, AC etc (fine with me as it saves weight) No radio or antenna either. The mileage was high (160k), the interior worn, rear window torn and it had a few dents and scrapes but it was fine for what I wanted it for. The spec for the ebay adver was as follow:
- full pro flex including all new camber pins camber set up at power station
- lowered eibach springs
- under body brace
- strut brace in engine bay
- VLSD as standard from the factory
- roll hoop, proper bolted to the chassis type
- decat stainless exhaust, it's very noisy.
- 4/2/1 manifold
- k/n induction kit
- Toyo Proxes all round and in great condition
- grooved and cross drilled front brake disks
- ebc green stuff pads all round
It has a dyno print off for 133.8bhp done just 5000 miles before I bought it too, which isn't bad considering the mileage.
Now I always liked the idea of having a rough/mean looking 5 and the red just wasn’t doing it for me. So I proceeded to ruin it. I had a problem with drivers wing mirror constantly falling down and there was a big dent in the driver’s door (I assume the last owner slid it sideways into something). I actually found a replacement door 2 houses down from me so I bought that to just replace it all. It was novel walking to pick up car parts
Now it was time to decide on a colour change so I thought I’d trial the colour on the door first. I wanted satin blue and I trailed some garage door paint with a roller and it went ok.
Now it was time to paint.
In the end, it looked kind of crap. But that is what I should have expected. Having a roller paint job is kind of interesting, it actually draws a lot of attention and I get in conversations at lights etc.
As you can see I had been driving around with a duct taped window the whole time and because it’s a banger I thought I would DIY fix it with some perspex window plastic.
The result was clear and water tight, you can see the glue on it though which bugs me a lot. Ill probably buy a new hood for it at some point.
I also bought a splitter which I am yet to fit. (the paint is all scuffed because I didn’t put the hand brake on and it rolled into a wall )
The last thing I did was put the horn on the dash because the momo thing had broken and I needed it for an MOT.
Right now its welding time. I will do what is necessary for now and I fully suspect it only has a year or two left in it before the inevitable rot make its uneconomical to keep on the road.
