Having bought our stripped out 5 to start dabbling in Track days, my mate Jon and I have our first outing at Blyton this weekend. Anyone else going? If so keep an out out for this and please come and say hello. Regarding tyres, we've now got some 15" wheels with some decent Toyo Proxes, 2x7mm left and 2x5mm left. Do the fronts or rears wear faster for track use (only)? Any thoughts on cold pressures, i know 26psi is standard but do you up them at all for track, 28psi cold?

I think the general consensus is to take some pressure out the tyres on track days. Because as the rubber gets hotter the pressure rises.

Righto, looks like it might be wet so will star at 26 this time.
Any thoughts on which axle tyres wear quicker?

I might pop over as I have a couple of friends booked on (Civic turbo, Integra type r, and an mx5), but I'm not sure yet, as I'm working that night.
I generally aim for 26 hot, so on a cold, wet day, I'd start around 24ish, on a warm day, lower, then come in relatively hot (back off on the straights and don't brake so hard, but still carry some speed through corners), then get the pressure to where I want it when I come off track.
But in all honesty, I wouldn't worry too much about getting your pressures right, as long as they're in the ballpark, in nearly 8 years of trackdays it's only the last year or so where I've started to play about, and it's never stopped me having fun in the past. I used to just set mine to 27 the day before and leave them there.
I must say I tend to find tyres wear roughly similar, regardless as to which end they're on, given the balanced nature of the car.

I used to get balanced wear on my road cars, wondered if it made any difference on track. Will start with the more tread on the rear as that feels the 'safer' option. Thanks for your advice. If you do go, please come and say hello

Blyton is REALLY tough on brakes so limit your sessions to a few laps. It's a small circuit with two or three big braking areas and your brakes don't get much rest in between.
If it's your first trackday I wouldnt worry too much about tyre pressures as long as they're not dangerously low or high and just enjoy it and learn the track. For info though, I usually run 28 hot, so start at 24, do a couple of laps, come in and check / adjust to suit.
You'll probably spend a lot of time getting out of people's way, don't be frustrated, or tempted to outdrive yourself or the car in an effort to keep ahead. Just enjoy it and the freedom to thrash the car legally!

Thanks for advice. To my surprise the previous owner renewed brakes with oem spec Mintex pads (and disks). When these fade is there any danger they won't come back when they cool down?
Want to get a baseline this weekend then work out what and where to improve. Suspect brakes will be the priority area.

Forgot to say, as the car is owned by 2 of us it will be on track more than the average I suspect.

Do you have good fluid in there? That'd be the priority. I use £20 pads on track and don't get any fade, which I put down to running good fluid.

No idea, only picked it up yesterday.
When you say good, is not all dot4 the same?

No. Racing dot 4 (ATE Type 200/Motul RBF600/RBF660 etc) has a much higher boiling point. They generally exceed dot5.1 boiling points by some margin.

Righto, thanks for that!!! So track day today, the most fun I've ever had driving, easily! I suspect this will become addictive What a great car a mk1 MX5 is. Ended up running 30psi hot, 26psi cold went to around 31 initially so let a little out then staying consistent. Ended up 2 clicks from full hard on Meister R's. Standard brakes were completely fie for us, even on 10 lap stints and very little turn around time. That said it was out first time so we were maybe not as committed on them as others. I only found Blyton to have 2 heavy braking points but as I say I am a novice. Learned what happens when you overheat road tyres (Toyo Proxes T1R's). Will keep these for a while but tyre upgrade is needed. Two separate people recommended Rodders so will give him a call at some point. Good times!

Addictive is right. It starts with trackdays and ends with expensive race cars! lol.
