So... I was reading on clubroadster.net about a chap who'd swapped a mk2 subframe and steering rack onto his mk1, and he said it was much better. (He also said the mk2 rack was a Manual one - I thought they were all PAS??) I have been thinking recently about doing (getting done...) the Mk2 top mount and suspension swap (with one coil cut off) onto my Mk1 because, frankly, the Bilsteins are ridiculous and completely unsuitable for UK roads. I fear I am going to damage something everytime I fall into an unseen pothole or have to go over a high speedbump! It occurred to me that if one was swapping Mk2 subframe and rack onto a mk1, would be easier to just literally transfer the whole lot in one go? i.e. just leave the subframe and suspension components and rack all attached to each other, then drop the old stuff off and swap the new stuff straight on? Would that even be possible? I'd be taking it somewhere to get it done (as I have no garage / ramps / skills lol), probably skuzzle, but I just thought I'd float the idea to see if it was do-able. Buying a complete Mk2 front end from a rear-ended car would likely be cheaper than buying all the different components and putting them together! Your thoughts are welcome!

Can't see any reason why it cannot be done. However why not pick up,the phone and ask Nick? If you're serious about getting him to do it then he would know of it can be done, what needs to changed, how long it would take and more importantly how much it'll cost you!
As for the difference between what you have now and what you may end up with then that is very much down to a load of variables other than swaping sub frames, as is its what's attached to them.

That is a fair point... lol
I could literally fit iron girders instead of my current suspension and it would be better, so I'm pretty confident an OEM setup would be like riding on a cushion of silk compared to it! lol
I think I might investigate welding my steering column before I do anything else - I have an annoying play in it, I think, which means the wheels don't always seem to do exactly what I want. Or at least I hope it's the column - I had one balljoint done recently so I hope it's not the other one on the way out too...

Before you do anything else check(or have checked) the pinch bolts on the lower universal joint where the steering column meets the rack, these have a habit of getting loose, allowing the rack to move a little bit before the flats on the column engage with it. When this happens your steering will develop a bit of slack(you can usually feel it whilst parking etc) and will make the front end seem a bit vague whilst driving just like you described. This is a cheap/free fix and I'm betting a pound this is what is happening to you.

I just want to get it so it feels 'right' - right now it feels like something's going to just snap mid-corner, which doesn't exactly inspire one to fully commit to cornering... lol
