Right, so, my car has always been faster than it had any right to be for what appeared to be a bone-stock 1.8
Upon swapping my cam cover, i checked to see if the cams are stock (they appear to be) or whether it had an exintake cam swap (it didn't as far as i could tell)
So we checked the timing..... 20 degrees!
Figured this was not great. We've knocked it back to 14-16 ish
And now the car is lumpy under 4k, flat spots, hessitation, occasionally feeling like it's holding back.
The next thing will be we'll put it BACK to 20 and see if it returns to normal.
If so, what the hell would explain such a weird situation!? Belt being a tooth out perhaps?

Deffo sounds like a tooth out, have you checked the guides that tell you how many teeth between the pulleys?

Mine was poo in the lower rev range When I got a chance to pull it apart it turned out some clownshoe had previously bodged the timing belt change. So check that. 19 teeth between the marks on the cam sprockets when it's at tdc is a quick check.

So, to put a bow on this (as so many forum posts end up without a resolution)......timing gun was out. Car is sat around 14deg quite happily now. Lulz.

Good times
Did you count 19 teeth between the marks on the pulleys?

While we are here, someone else said about advancing the timing to make a 5 go quicker. What are the downsides to this? What are the ideal settings anyway? I know literally nothing about this!

From what i have seen the 14 degree kod doesnt make all that much difference unless you tie it in with fiddling the AFM on a 1.6 - best to get it done to suit your car than go off a number lots of others use

I was just wondering if it was a quick tweak worth asking Scuzzle to do while my car is there? Only if it was worthwhile before I get some proper tuning done.

Yep definitely worth asking him as he can do it using the dyno

If you ask for some regrind cams, they will stick it on the dyno afterwards and tweak it to the best timing for the engine

I will be getting all that done at some point, when I have saved up for the next stage.
