show, tell, advise.. Discuss
I have been on stock brakes so far with no problems on track, although i have only done short sessions with no real hard braking and no full days, so i decided to upgrade..
New standard discs all round, solid rear vented front
Motul rbf 660
New standard rear pads
New Rodders front pads
Hoping that will suffice for when i get on full track days and i hope its ok for daily driving as it is my only car.
Japfest 2 will be their first test at the end of June, only short sessions but i will lean on them hard and see how they do.

Current setup is, I believe, standard / pattern-part 1.6 stuff but Pagid front pads - they look a lot like the pads on the ECP website so I think they are pretty much standard, they certainly aren't Pagid Blues that I've run in a previous car! Smaaaaall issue is they feel wooden when cold and don't actually seem to work at first so I fear I will one day run over an errant child I am trying to avoid, but once warmer they are pretty consistent in (lack of) feel. I can't say they inspire confidence at all so I do want to change them. Roddisons pads are on the list, as are Hawk HP+ from Moss Europe, but the geek in me wishes Roddisons would publish a mu graph so I can compare it to the Hawk graph (which appears to have very high friction of about 0.40 from cold). Budget wise I can't really afford anything at all lol, nevermind the 1.8 carriers/discs/pads that I think I fancy, despite comments on here that the 1.6 standard setup with uprated pads is just fine, even for 15-20 minutes of full-on racing on track. (Why is it that we are conditioned into thinking that bigger/more expensive must be better? It is annoying!) If I had £££ then I'd probably buy Carbone Lorraine RC5+ again - I loved the fact they felt 'grindy' and confidence-inspiring through the brake pedal when cold and pottering round town, and the fact they would warm up and increase their grip while you kept your foot in one position was on one hand slightly annoying by making braking pressure a bit more difficult to judge, but on the other hand pretty cool lol. They also had a touch of racecar squeal when cold, which is quite fun haha

Track day / sprint only car, only drive it to and from the track on the road.
ATE Superblue fluid (Typ 200 now I think) Stock 1.8 calipers Cheapest pads available (Usuall APEC from the local motor factors) Cheapest discs available.
Never have issues or fade. I'm sure more expensive pads might last longer, might bite harder, but I don't feel the need. I'm not a race driver

I do wonder if my stock 1.8 setup would have withstood hardbraking all day on track.. but wouldnt want to find out! I had fade on the road in my 1.2 clio when i was a nipper and it scared the crap outta me.. do not want that again.

Standard brakes on good quality pads will suffice if running standard power. As long as they're in good serviceable condition.
To put it in perspective Skuzzle ran his MK1 at the 2014 Race of Remembrance for 8 hours on one set of Rodders pads with a standard 1.6 setup. The only breaks in that 8 hours were for driver changes and fuel stops with a 30 min break for the remembrance service at 11am. That's 7.5 hours at race pace, on R rubber at a circuit with a couple of heavy stopping zones.
Now a road car is a little heavier and if you run with a passenger that's more weight on top, but you should still not run into issues.
I ran my supercharged car on 1.6 setup and EBC yellows for 18 months. Th only problems I had was big stops generated a lot more heat from the higher speeds and caused a couple of small brake fires. I never had any fade or suffered bad wear.
I now run Wilwoods up front (with a bias valve to move a bit more effort to the rear) and they are un doubtably better. You can brake later and harder but it is much easier to snatch a wheel under braking than it was before. It actually makes it bit tricker in some respects as you have to modulate your breaking much more than on the standard set up. Trial braking i had relearn as with a little more rear bias it it has habit of the backend breaking away in the turn in phase. The other benefit is bigger brakes dissipate heat much better, although I have still set these on fire once at Abingdon airfield.
The Skuzzle MK2 monsters has just had Wilwoods fitted to the front, the front callipers (1.8) and discs adapted to fit the rear, a 1" Wildwood Master Cylinder, an in car bias valve and line lock installed. Not tested that yet so I'll report back next weekend after we've tried it at Blyton at the OC day. If you're there come out for a ride!

What is it that sets alight during brake fires? Just the pad material, I assume? Would be a somewhat interesting conversation if you got pulled by the old bill on the road during/after a 'spirited run' and had to say "one moment while I put my car out, officer" I assume you run uprated fluid, Horney?

Yeah I run ATE blue.
I've only ever set the pads alight on track. I do t think it would be possible to get hem that hot on the road no matter how hard you tried.

Nice, cheers for the feedback The Rodders pads were on my list so it's good to get more comments that they are good as they are said to be I've thrown caution / common sense to the wind and now have some Hawk HP+ sitting in the kitchen, ready to go on when I get some brave pills and decide to tackle the handbrake faffing etc...
