Right then, today I have a day off. I haven't had much time to look at the beastie in the garage since it failed the last MOT on emission AGAIN.
Hoping that perhaps this thread could become useful for others eventually, but for now I need some ideas. Not sure why I was surprised, but simply fitting a new catalytic converter and hoping for the best did not get the emissions pass I had hoped for. I have a few bits waiting to be fitted, that is this morning's job; however, there is bound to be something I haven't thought of. Summer's a wastin', I should to get this little bastard back blasting the lanes again.
Mine is a fairly standard 1.8 NA 1996
Oil smells very fuelly indeed. Plugs have a little black soot around the rim but the actual contacts are evenly covered in greyish deposit.
New bits-
IL Motorsport Lambda Sensor
8mm HT Leads
Coolant temp probe for the back of the engine
catalytic converter (non type approved as not necessary for my car, but does have 2 year warranty haha)
Another MAF of dubious origin + some proprietary MAF cleaner spray to clean both the old and 'new' ones.
Different TPS
Codes-
Last time I looked the codes didn't appear to make much sense
10 14 14 13 11 14 10 12
10 is the air temp sensor which is apparently in the MAF.
12 is the Throttle position sensor which I have a replacement for.
14 is the most worrying as I hear the barometric pressure sensor is in the PCM/ECU which was why I thought I would try to fix the other stuff, run it and hope the code clears as if by magic.
That just leaves 11 and 13 which don't seem to be listed anywhere...
The plan for today is to fit the bits, stick a decat on then run it and see whether it still chucks out any of the same codes. Please do enlighten me if you have any better ideas as I am basically just thinking out loud here. I love spannering but I wouldn't say I really know exactly what I should be doing!
In the event that I need a new ECU I am wondering whether I might be best to fit a Megasquirt or similar, not really wanting to pay extortionate prices for a paired BPU2A PCM with matching immobiliser module and stupid keys but still essentially having an old ECU which might already have the same problem. Meh
