So, I went in to my local doom-monger, sorry, garage bloke to arrange fitting of my new exhaust (which can't come soon enough as my broken one is driving me craaaaazy...), as well as an oil/coolant/filter change (because it's too low for my jack and I have no easy way to deal with all the used liquids). I mentioned that the exhaust was a manifold-back system and should have all the gaskets, clamps, etc, including a blanking plug for the lambda sensor. Cue much sucking of teeth... My understanding is that the Lambda is required to monitor the mixture of the exhaust gases (post-catalytic convertor?) so the ECU can know how rich to run the air/fuel mixture going into the engine. It would therefore make sense to replace the sensor back into the new exhaust rather than insert the blanking plug and leaving the sensor hanging free to the outside world? In that case, why does the new system come with a blanking plug?? Is it for cars that are running aftermarket ECUs that have specific maps setup on the dyno, and/or which use separate sensors to modify the air/fuel mix, which therefore don't need the lambda sensor? I am confused.com I have the joy of the yearly torture test (MOT) coming up in the near future so I don't want it to massively fail on emissions - I'm only a little concerned about removing the Cat as it's an early one so should have the non-Cat test, and I know most cars easily pass it, but it has been smelling 'rich' recently...

What model is this for?
In my NA, I think the lambda sensor is between the manifold and the catalytic converter.
That is exactly what the lambda sensor is for - the ECU uses it to look at the air / fuel mixture to determine if it's lean or rich. I can't imagine that you'd want to remove the lambda sensor from your car or just leave it hanging free.
Does your new exhaust have a place for it to go?

NA6 New exhaust does come with a hole for it and a blanking plug for the hole, I think (not opened up the package as it will be a faff to repackage it to get it to the garage lol) but I'm just confused why it would have a blanking plug in the first place!

Yeah, seems odd. Might just in case you want to relocate the lambda sensor.. for bants. I have no idea. Basically, you probably want to keep the lambda sensor. It's good. Should also note that they are an absolute pain to get out and that you might be better off getting a replacement to put in with the new exhaust
