So, I fear my Aux belt is either too tight or too loose. Has anyone got one of the "V-ribbed belt tension gauge" tools from Mazda, part number 49 9200 020A? (As shown on this Service Tools sheet in the top left: www.mazdaspd.com/manual_files/01-60.pdf)Or are there better / cheaper versions available? I couldn't find anything on AutoLink / MX5Parts / Moss Europe Any help much appreciated!

Is it squeeling? it might be the wrong one, what model /engine size year of 5? it took me 3 belt to get the right one. If it`s a 1.6 SNC be careful not to over tighten. About half an inch up and down movement in the middle of the belt is what you are looking for. Also what belt number did you fit?

About half an inch up and down movement in the middle of the belt is what you are looking for. Also what belt number did you fit? It is an early 1.6 SNC, hence I don't want to break it! I took off a Gates 6466MC with markings of 066BE 87/88/89 (as fitted by Skuzzle) and put on a Gates 6466MC with markings of 042BE 67/68/69 (because that's what I was sent). The replacement belt did seem slightly shorter but I didn't know if it was due to stretch on the fitted one - I had to undo the alternator adjustment screw as far as it would go to get the belt over the alternator pulley, which I thought might be a bit strange? But then managed to do the adjustment bolt back up to not far off where it was before. Tightness-wise, I was going off the deflection guide in the Workshop Manual / Rod Grainger book - about 8-9mm deflection for 10kg / 22lb of pressure. I couldn't really tell deflection on the length of belt that goes between the crank and the alternator so I tested the vertical section between the water pump pulley and the crank. 10kg/8mm is a canoe load of pressure, hurt my not-very-well-calibrated finger lol (which couldn't achieve the stated pressure on the bathroom scales indoors), and 8-9mm is nowhere near half an inch, so perhaps I have done it too tight, despite trying to follow the manuals?? I now have a kind of high pitched whine that rises in volume and pitch as the revs rise - I don't think it's the belt slipping as it does make that sort of sound occasionally when rising from the bottom of the rev range. I've kept the revs down since doing it as I'm not sure it's right... I'm scared to tighten it up in case I kill the engine, but I'm also scared to loosen it off in case it jumps off again Bloody cars!!

Whining would likely indicate a belt too tight. Cambelt can whistle if it's not been tensioned correctly but you've not done that so can rule it out. I'd loosen the belt off a touch and if the whine goes away, job done.

Awesome, cheers for the advice - that's tomorrow morning's job, then... lol (I can borrow the missus' car to get around but I really don't do having a roof since having the 5! )

Iirc the 6466MC is shorter and thicker too, which means it doesn`t sit in the pullys properly. I have the same engine,i eventually found a belt from a Nutz member at a local meet up. Company brand is Solid Ace ,part number is N122051 air con belt(alternator),i have a spare Gates 6216MC (364BE 178 - 179) but iirc it is a little bit to long but the right thickness,ok as a back up.

Thanks for the reply The Gates does seem to fit slightly proud of the groove on the water pump pulley, like the V-sections are in the groove but the material outer part is just outside of it, but perhaps it will 'squeeze' into the V securely once 'run-in'?? I've had a search for that Solid Ace part number but nothing has come up, boooo. MX5Parts only has two options: www.mx5parts.co.uk/alternator-belt-motorsport-mk1-only-p-3119.htmlwww.mx5parts.co.uk/alternator-belt-aftermarket-mk1-only-p-211.htmlAnd Autolink similarly has two options: www.autolinkmx5.com/belt-alternator-mazda-mx-5-16-mk1-1989-98-fan-belt-13x900-v-belt-7-p.aspwww.autolinkmx5.com/belt-alternator-mazda-mx-5-16-mk1-1989-98-fan-belt-oem-gates-13x900-v-belt-8748-p.aspthe latter of which is the one I ordered / fitted. None of those seem to be SolidAce, so perhaps I'll have to find the SolidAce contact details and drop them a line! EDIT: Is this SolidAce?? www.solidautouk.co.uk/index.php It looks like it's a distributor rather than doing sales to individuals...

"Is this SolidAce?? www.solidautouk.co.uk/index.php It looks like it's a distributor rather than doing sales to individuals..." I`ll nip out and check the actual belt on the car in a bit, just to make sure they match with the number i gave you from the packaging, but yeah , that`s them.

Awesome, cheers! Amazon is £11.40 from that listing (don't know why it has a non-Amazon price on the main listing?!) and there's that stupid £20 minimum order for free delivery, grrr, but that one on ebay from carpartsinmotion is £9.88 and free delivery, so I think that will be the way forward! Didn't manage to get round to loosening the belt off a bit today so that's a job for tomorrow morning before work...

Not really a surprise, although it was slightly annoying that the chap seemed to be saying I could get stuff checked in their workshop with their tool but seemingly couldn't order one of those tools myself...
