Thanks! I will save that search.
I notice some people are running a six speed box. Is that an involved conversion or a straight swap? I presume the benefit is better motorway mpg?

Kinda a straight swap. The box fits with no modifications but you need a matching rear diff or else the gear ratios are stupidly short. Essentially you take the whole set up from a 6 speed mk2. This what I have done on my supercharge car. Gearbox, 3.6 :1 ratio TorSen diff, prop and half shafts from MK2RS. The whole lot cost me £600 and took about half a day to swap on a lift. You end up with a slightly longer top gear and a shorter spread below.

That looks mint, nice pick up re: seats, check out Racetech - their RT1000 is night and day the comfiest seat I've sat in, I reckon, even better than the Recaros I used to have in another car, with a shaped seat back that actually resembles the shape of a spine instead of a flat board...: www.racetecheurope.co/shop/seatsSmall issue is that it is not going to fit without some work, but the UK distributor chap has links to Cobra, who should be able to adjust wing widths and re-cover it... (which is my plan when I actually get some money together...)

Thanks guys. So is the 6 speed conversion worth the effort overall?
Yes my car is pretty tidy. I'd give the body a 8/10 up close. From a distance or in photos it looks better. I wouldn't mind it being perfect though. I was going to get the nose painted anyway, as the numberplate left some holes. Removing the front and rear badges leave some more. Then the daft mud flaps left some feint marks of their own. Being silver it is not ideal to paint a bit here and there. So I am getting a quote for a whole body respray to make it mint.
Not a cheap month! I'll be selling my Alfa once all the work is done.

As Horney mentioned you want one with a 4.3 final drive, The more common 4.1 torsens will kill a 1600 and it's one of the main reason's I didn't want another 1800 the gearing is far too long for the stock engine.

Im thinking my car will be getting tuned up over the next year or so. Not to mad levels, but a bit more than standard. So will that make much difference to the ideal rations I'll be aiming for? If you ended up with circa 180bhp, for example, what box and ratios would you want then? Do I stick with the 5 speeder and change my diff?Or do I wait and swap in a 6 speeder and a different diff? My car will be for road use mostly. Options, options! Thanks for any help

Thanks for any help If you're going to be using it as a daily car, or driving lots of motorway/longer distance on a regular basis then the stock dif ratio will be absolutely fine with that sort of power. the dif i'm about to fit into my car will make it a pretty horrid car to take on long distances, the fuel consumption will go down even further and the noise from my exhaust at 60mph will be enough to drive most crazy! But for what I use the car, it'll be perfect, I've ran short final drives on my previous cars and love them. Always in the power, only really useful when mated to an NA car. A boosted car with a short final drive would be nigh on useless unless it was solely used for sprints/hill climbing.

Thanks bomber. That is the sort of real world advice I was looking for: weighing up performance gains v real world living with it on long trips as well as short blasts.
So my final question would be, assuming I keep the stock ratios and 5 speed box v getting a 6 speed box at some point... in that case and with the same power, what ratios would suit me if I had the 6 speeder?

If you go 6 speed it's best to keep it with the diff ratio Mazda combined them with unles you want to go super short. Most of the breakers who'll source the box from will be able to giet you a matching set from the same car. Avoid the later diffs though as they're chocolate. You want the 6 speed box and diff from a 10th Anniversary or MK2 RS (Plus a couple of other special editions from the 99 - 01 era).

Yeah about that I have a 6 speed with a 4.3 torsen, acceleration is awesome, motorway cruing however is terrible.

By the way, if you're going to be driving it regularly I would definitely suggest you get it undersealed to keep the rust away. It looks in pretty good shape now and would be a shame to let the tin worms get in on our salty roads...

Thanks chaps I had the entire underside and all cavities professionally protected before it even arrived. It was done in the middle of that mega hot spell of weather a little while ago. So pretty much perfect timing! It was sticky and goopy, but has now finally set off a little more to be a bit like rubber. I will use the car all year around as it will be my only car. Although I may use my girls car from time to time! However during the winter the most I will ever use it will be once ever other week (as I work from home). I will aim to hose the underside off fully after use and keep it polished, waxed and under the best cover I can find. About that... sorry, another question! Are the covers from MX5 Parts as good as they get? They do look a bit baggy is all I'd say.
