Does anyone know the actual benefit of doing this?? Aerodynamics? Getting rid of rot??  I must confess, I quite like it (sorry) but I can't work out what you'd gain from doing it? I guess it's like cutting or drilling the rear bumper, on a car with all the top aero mods and a good set up it'd be beneficial but to the rest of us it just looks cool (or doesn't!) |

The theory is that it reduces the high pressure area in the wheel wells, by letting air escape, whether or not the difference is noticeable, is questionable.

I'm not sure it's really of benefit to an MX5 - to the Aston Martins etc that I've seen, yes, but I think to feel the benefit in a 5 you'd have to be running silly power or keep your brain in a jar at the foot of the bed when you go out for a drive lol

Not really, drag reduction in something with as little power as an MX5 makes perfect sense. Bearing in mind it'll be creating drag at road speeds, so if you're doing trackdays etc, it'll certainly be having an effect.

The championship winning HSA MX5 from last year had cuts to side and a funky rear bumper www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk/speedscenearticles/167/mugglestone.pdfIts worth mentioning that although that car won the championship like that, someone who copied those mods this year has struggled to get past scrutineers in roadgoing HSA MX5 class with these holes and had to tape them up, we didn't think tape would hold if these worked as expected but the tape never got blown off so quite how much difference they make who knows. |
