Is there a general consensus / recomendations on the 'best' gearbox and diff (viscous LSD) oils for a mk1 1.6?
Assume both are with car level just drain and then fill until level with filler plug?
Cheers

Can't remember which oil but undo the filler plugs FIRST. Nothing worse than draining a box/diff and then finding you can't undo the filler.

I found it really difficult to get the diff plugs off.
I ended up driving to my gfs brothers and got him to open them. With a breaker bar and I think they were imperial sockets?

23mm & 24mm for the diff.

Thanks for the above, any idea on actual fluid types (weights) though?

I actually might have to drill my filler plug. Previous owner did a wicked cool dorito spec mod where a long bolt was badly welded to the rounded off filler plug and it was doubling up as an exhaust hanger using a massive jubilee clip. Obviously the years old bodge had corroded and the bolt popped off it's welds leaving pure horror in it's wake. Haven't tried stud extractors yet but I don't really want to buy any. It might actually be easier to just put my spare canoeing gearbox on, rather than canoeing around trying to get drill the plug out...unless I went through the wall of the tunnel from the passenger side footwell...Is that a method anyone has tried. The bodgery on my car astounds me and will no doubt take many more years to unravel. Back on the road AGAIN soon against all odds. Fizbne needs to review this ting once he is the right way up again.
I am eventually hoping to be able to submit it to a canoe doriftu mods museum, once we are all being forced to ride to our untimely deaths in autonomous teslas by policemen with SA80s in the near future. It is basically a catalogue of terrible bodges.

unless I went through the wall of the tunnel from the passenger side footwell...Is that a method anyone has tried. I've thought of that a number of times - can't see any reason why not - it works on my kitcar where access to the filler plug is otherwise impossible. I've plugged the hole with a big plastic grommet I had lying around - probably a drain plug from a car boot floor or similar. Otherwise a plate screwed back on using self-tappers but I'd be inclined to insulate it as the trans tunnel gets pretty hot... You just have to ensure you're drilling through in the right place! Maybe use a large hole saw? Cheers, Pewe.

Indeed, I am probably going to end up doing something involving holesaws. My interior is stripped so it is not a major job. All progress has stopped on the Mazda whilst I fiddle with various Toyota things and find a new car for my gf (not a 5).
