So, to have the best of everything you'd have a mk1 import shell for rust free, a 2.5 bottom end for the strongest block but with forged rods for f1, a mk2 top end for non vvt for fi setup.
I guess to get this id have to sell up and get a mk1 1.8, then build a separate engine with a 2.5 bottom, 2.0 top and forged rods, then do an engine swap using the mk1 ecu, then build fi around that.
is the gains really worth it over my 2.5?

That would be a pretty good setup i think, especially if you got an early import shell for easier emissions tests and no need for the cat. The 'gains' would be pop up lights in exchange for a slightly less stiff frame. Looks or performance. Choice based on what you want the car for I guess...

Is it wrong of me to say I've got a mk1 but the part I hate most is the headlights?!

I won't burn mate. It's been tried. I love the flushed headlights, soooo expensive though! Other than that... I love my mk1

I'm definitely in a minority here then!

I'm definitely in a minority here then! Haha there are some low profile headlight conversions if you can't live with the "barn doors" 80s style.
