As you may or may not know, my engine made some horrible noises at a competition yesterday and i limped away on 3 cylinders. ironically it was going to be my last event prior to the big winter rebuild - just a shame it didnt last out to the very end. the car has been going ok but has been down a little on compression and using a bit of oil, however i got stuck in at lunchtime today and carried on this evening and have made a massive amount of progress. My own engine hoist, luckily i strengthened the garage roof last year, well pleased with the hoist! annoyingly, cant see anything obvious on head or engine Beginning to wonder if i fried the coil pack!!! Anyway its worth doing, cos I can also give my engine bay a good clean and change the clutch I will update this thread in case anyones interested!

Fair to you, I'd be lost in this undertaking.

Good luck with the rebuild, will you be going forged or sticking with oem? I'm sticking with OEM, I'm keeping the car fairly standard at the moment. I need to change the clutch but cant work out whether to stick with the OEM or go for something a bit better, (Exedy??) I will probably have a head skim and perhaps a valve regrind. Pistons out tonight Gonna be doing a lot of cleaning and then a trip to Autolink for a load of parts!

Your a better man than me, I'd convince myself that I'd need rods, pistons, cams etc!!! Good thought on the clutch, somthing that can take a bit of a thrashing but still feels oem. Got a twinclutch in my mk1, great for handling the power but I groan when I see traffic!!!

So now i have everything in pieces, i have been pricing up what i need. On the basis that i was going to go for a head skim and there is a tiny bit of lateral movement in my valves (guide replacement maybe) i am beginning to wonder whether to try and get a low mileage mk2 head, i believe i can also get a 2.5 head but the vvt wont work without extra gubbins, apart from needing the mk2 manifold i believe they bolt straight on, anybody done this? The other option is a complete low mileage mk2.5 engine, if i could get the vvt to run it might be worth it? Or i could spend the money on mine and then have an (almost) good as new engine? too many decisions what to do

Then big end bearings, rings, seals, gaskets etc plus the clutch, put it all back together - Roberts your Mums brother!!! I will post when i'm doing stuff at weekends and anyone local who wants to come round for coffee, sarnies and to observe, help, lig about, etc, is welcome!

Heads gone for refurb and skim. I've ordered all the parts, got an exedy clutch from MX5heaven, seemed good value, the rest from Autolink, over £400, all paid for by the sale of my ME221! This weekend me and the missus are off to Cornwall for a little escape, (would have liked to have motored down in the 5 but hey ho!) Next weekend will be the boring bit - gonna do a lot of cleaning parts and engine bay. Also I have to do the clutch on my folks Corsa while they are away - PITA! Will post more pics soon
