Hello all,
First of all you can skip a lot of this if you just want to get straight to the point, I have ended up writing a load of poorly structured shpeel below so just head to the bit in bold for the real question.
I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a little dilemma I am currently having. My '91 1600 mk1 currently has a td04 bolted onto the side of it, with all the usual bits and bobs to make it go whoosh and go fast. Currently I only have an ME221 base map, but all is well.
Here comes the dilemma...It's too fast. Feel free to call me a big girls blouse, or anything else that may target my masculinity; before you get too carried away though please hear me out.
The majority of my driving will (and currently is all) "fast road driving" as much as I would love to hit the track the fact I am likely to be saving hard for a house for a good while yet sort of rules out such luxuries, at least on a regular basis anyway. The car currently is still rocking the factory brake set up plus a booster off a strut mount, which in all honesty are not too bad IMO if you really stand on them, but with the current power output (and in all honesty, if it retains its whooshy snail it will get more power) it needs a brake upgrade, and a host of other supporting mods to make it the car I want.
Back to the bit where I am not a man- on the roads even as it is now I honestly feel like it is less fun to drive than it was when it was completely unmolested, don't get me wrong its an absolute hoot but in a world of police, other road users who drive infuriatingly slowly at times on some of the best roads, and the vast array of solid objects that line the edges of our roads I feel the limits of the car, and the ability to gain speed are in fact at a license (or worse) losing point. Now I am not one for drifting around town or hooning it inappropriately but if you build a car like these, you want to push it a bit. With the skinny tyres on the daisies it came with and the modest power output I just felt you could really stretch the car out without fearing seeing blue lights or a man with a speed gun in a horsebox/van somewhere.
So now for my dilemma; I can only apologize for taking so long to get to it, congrats if you are still reading this! The head needs to come off for a bit of an overhaul, valve stems seals are sat next to me on the desk. I am considering wholeheartedly getting rid of the 959 RS-Rs in favor of an agressive road tyre with a little less stick. Selling all my exhaust gubbins, and the whooshy snail in favor of a nice 4 branch, some bike throttle bodies and a little cam work with a fairly aggressive head skim and some advance on the timing.
I am 90% set on doing this, I just have a small fear that I will end up disappointed due to it feeling slow (how ironic after the above rant) sadly I don't have any friends with tuned N/A mx5s so cant have a go in one, so I call upon the next best thing: THE INTERNET.
Is a tuned N/A car a better fast road car than the turbo car?
Much thanks, hopefully this will spark some good chatter as the whole chassis vs. pub bragging power figures is a really big point of conversation for me and a few friends at the moment.
