depends on how you get your kicks, really. revving the nuts off a 5 is fun. riding a wave of turboness is fun. practically speaking i guess it might be easier to overtake the slow drivers in a turbo'd 5. i reckon my standard 5 could do with another 50hp to keep it on the right side of roadfriendliness

I opted for NA on my mk1 1.8. - Blink stage 1 head and cams and Megasquirt. It's plenty fast enough, but more importantly, it feels harmonious and balanced to drive, handling and braking are on the same level as the engine power, and how the power is delivered. It's very enjoyable to drive. My daily drivers for the last few years have been turbo Subarus, currently a Forester 2.5 with Prodrive pack and a remap plus suspension tweaks and it's a bit of a beast, so I wanted a different driving experience from the 5.

After owning a supercharged 1.6, then a turbocharged 1.6 im now back to a standard 1.6 import. After I turbo'd my last one it was pretty cool, kept up with much bigger stuff on the track, but on the road it wasn't that enjoyable. Im really enjoying being in a standard powered 1.6 again, as you have to really work for the speed, I think that is what these cars are about, you feel much more involved driving them with less power. There are pro's and cons to both, but as a road car I think standard NA power is where it's at.

I have to admit I still find my turbo 1.6 a bit daunting to drive. after getting it mapped to about 10psi/180WHP. I admittedly need more practice however.
it's also lazier to drive now because anything over 4K is enough to bring the torque on (and how it comes...)

I don't think it's just about the power. It's how that's combined with tyre compounds, wheel widths and diametre and weight, suspension set-up, brakes, anti-roll bar thickness and settings.
A car has to be set up correctly for the power it's running.
Many unfortunately are just turbo'd to the max and everything gets a bit . . . Tense.
I switched to driving my 5 from a 993 Porsche with 275bhp and a 175mph top speed. I found the 5 more fun at legal speeds because the Porsche didn't connect with you and come alive until it was well into illegal territory.
However, my 5 got better when I braced it and the suspension started to really work properly with less chassis flex.
Then I supercharged it and it found its natural running speed and rhythm (136wbhp).
Now I've added an intercooler and 150mm crank overlay and feel I may have hit the 'sweetspot'. (? wbhp). The balance and 'feel' of the car is almost perfect.
I will fit the RX8 injectors I have for sh1ts and giggles, but have a feeling I may revert back because I want a fast GT style feel, not a firework with a saddle.
The defining characteristic I love about my car is that I'm still running 6.5 inch wide rims (Panasports). The weight and dimensions of these wheels (14" s a nice compliant sidewall) give a fantastic ride and handling balance (not darty, like it was before on Work 15"), so it just flows down the road.
I enjoyed my car immensely in NA spec. Would I go back now?
Nope. I'll keep honing it until it's perfectly in the zone. . . for me.
I think that's probably the essence. Set the car up for what floats your boat. Countryside cruiser to stripped out ballistic missile. Everyone has their own idea of what constitutes a perfect unforgettable ride. That's what makes this community so interesting. Making yours match that vision.

I come from a slightly different angle. I bought the 5 to replace the Caterham I lost, so I wanted a fun car with similar power to weight. I also fancied a windscreen and heater too. But there's nothing quite like the driving style of natural aspiration. So supercharger it was, and I'm very happy with it too. It's 175whp, and with decent suspension, geometry and tyres, it's not all that dramatic compared with the 7 and, I think, very easy to drive. But it's all relative. Compared to my family car (which is actually faster!) it's terrifying

I think a lot of the it comes down to setup, both of the car and the implementation of your FI setup, there so much ability in my 5 for its handling and grip levels it is crying out for more, as am I, next step for me is a choice between throttle bodies or FI, I think TBs will just be an expensive disappointment like all the other NA tuning I have done.

there was a chap with a nice Rotrex set up last weekend at Skuzzle - its expensive - but i think its the best of both worlds - FI power but with NA linear delivery. Looks nice as well so much less obtrusive than a big eaton lump (and much less heat than a turbo!)

If it was my cash I'd be going for one of those BorgWarner EFR tubos. Was on the rollers at Northampton Motorsport yesterday & my M45 SC MK2.5 made 156whp.

This is my first MX5 and I'm loving it as NA however, most of my other cars have been 250bhp+ JDM turbos, (MR2 turbos, GT4, S-Bodies) and I'm more curious as to how fast an FI MX5 will feel. I've got nearly everything I need to turbo my little Mazda so am excited to see what it's like in comparison to the bigger boys.

Bad news is I've had to bail out of the double header at Gurston as bloody work won't give me the time off!! Would've been interesting to see my finish speed from the long drag uphill from ashes compared to the MK1. So my first event will be Prescott on the 27th May.

Thats a shame you are not competing at Gurston. Would be nice to have another forced induction 5 to compete against.
Mine does 92mph over the finish with 200wheel horsepower.

I only manage 74mph though I have only been once. I haven't put Gurston on my list this year. Werrington entries are open have you tried that one, I found it more interesting
