Thats a shame you are not competing at Gurston. Would be nice to have another forced induction 5 to compete against. Mine does 92mph over the finish with 200wheel horsepower. My brother's taking the MX5 to Gurston...... It'll be his first ever motorsport event so I've told him to take it easy & bring it back in 1 piece!!!!! I did 37.4 in my 300hp Griff & 41.9 in the 135hp MK1, so I'm hoping he'll do less than 40 sec. We're doing the Classic Marques Championship.

I only manage 74mph though I have only been once. I haven't put Gurston on my list this year. Werrington entries are open have you tried that one, I found it more interesting Yeah, I got the email but I'm struggling for time off & it's not part of our championship so won't be going.

interesting that most replies endorse NA even if they've got FI now. I'm the same! just SC'd my 1.6 track car, it was part of the journey in a long line of mods. It's useful on bigger tracks to be in the main traffic flow and not be pulling over all the time. I'm thinking of Dony and Silverstone. At Brands, Snett and Cadwell NA was fine, though more power brings new challenges, which is good.
Lessons i've learned: - FI costs more than you budget for. (project creep, more things break and heat needs sorting) - more power needs more braking at the end of the straight. no surprise, but another mod beckons. - if buying a new 5 i'd stay NA. The 1.6 can easily get 130whp, i had 112whp after some tuning and ECU fitted in preparation for the charger. So cams would add 10-20? and keep the high revving character.

On the flipside (from an N/A ITB MK1 owner), FI provides easy power, and if you keep the boost low, the engine is not overly stressed. If you just apply enough boost to be a bit quicker than a MK2 RS (about 160 bhp?) then you're laughing. Getting a MK1 1.6 or 1.8 over 160 bhp makes for a fragile engine and costs about the same, if not more.

Just an aside; Dave Newman does the HSA sprint series in his n/a mk1 - hes running ITBs, forged internals, head work, cams etc etc and all the ancillary work that goes with that, he now has a 220bhp car BUT he will tell you it wasn't cheap!! Very quick though and he stays in the under 2000cc classes, if he FI'd he would not be competitive in the over 2000cc class So it all comes down to what you want but there is absolutely no doubt that turbo is the cheapest bang for buck! Big powerna comes at a cost.
A little Starlet or Daihatsu 1.3 turbo keeps you in the under 2000cc classes and would be competitive as they are so light - idea for the future - bit crap though!!

Problem with forced induction when competing particularly if like me you'll go anywhere is a lack of consistent regs throughout regions, so you end up in different classes each outing, you don't get that consistent pack of rivals to gauge yourself against.
I found that when running my Abarth with a 1368cc turbo, some events i'd be in the upto 2 litre class due to class bump for FI, others there would be a 1.4x multiplier others a 1.7x, other events would split turbo and NA, it was a mess.
I still want to go FI a some point but I am eying up a proper boosted engine rather than a boosted 4 pot. I want some aural melody along with it, will be for a daily though rather than competing in.

I think 1.7 is a harsh multiplier but yes unless you stick to one championship it is difficult to gauge, 1.4 & 1.5 seems to be the most common? is it the Classic marques speed challenge that uses some sort of handicap system based on power to weight ratio, is that fairest?

Yes they do, that has its own issues, you don’t know where you are until someone has calculated your score, it’s bad enough in the HSA where you aren’t 100% sure of your points until the calc but at the very least if you are in front of your class rival you know you have at least beaten your class rival. With 200kg more weight and 30bhp less power than Dave I’d stomp him evey round even if he was ahead with Classic Marques LOL, perhaps it’s where I need to be competing make my weight pay for itself

The Classic Marques formula works really well IMHO. After 1st practice at any event, you know where you need to be time wise- exactly like any other competition. Last weekend the top six were split by 1/10 of a second....Its getting really popular - this season we have been seeing 20+ drivers per event.
A couple of weeks ago I came 2nd at Curbs to a well driven Ginetta G4 by 0.02, but what goes around comes around as I'd beaten him by 0.001 at Prescott.
Anyway, back on track, I like the SC. It makes the power delivery just feel like a bigger engine than it really is.

I bought my Larini exhaust off a chap in Poole that does sprints in a car that matches that description, and his name was Dave Sadly, he doesn't keep his 5 at his home so I couldn't have a nose. He did have a rather lovely orange Capri!
FI can still be expensive - I spent over 10k on mine.

That's him I think He hinted that it was stupidly expensive to achieve (i.e my 10k wouldn't suffice lol)
