I've got some wide 15" wheels ... 9" front and 10" rear. I can find tyres to suit the front .... DMack, Toyo R888, Yokohama A048 etc in 225/45/15. I can also find some nice tyres for the rear ... Maxxis VR-1 coming out soon in 245/40/15. Question is, as I have a staggered setup, is there anything that will go on all 4?

225 R888? Could go to 235 at the rear, they are big for 235s.

235 R888 is only available in /50 profile making it 35 mm bigger in diameter compared to 225/45. Might or might not be a problem?

Cheers for the info, I think 235/50 might be a bit tall on the profile. Will see if I can find any pics of 225/45 on a 10" wheel as I've heard MX5s prefer the same size all round rather than staggered. Might be easier to sell the 10s and get another pair of 9s Russell

Interested in the topic myself, went straight onto Google and found these pictures of 225/45 R888 on 15x10. They are stretched but I'd guess in the way which would not be detrimental to performance. And here a few pictures of 235/50 on 15x10, scroll down for pictures of them on the car. I like how aggressive they look and fill the massive arches, wouldn't want to know how much power is needed to make the car fun to drive with them on though.

Mine on 9" wheels for comparison (225): They're probably big enough for the 10" wheels too.

Brilliant, thanks guys. Tweeks are doing 20% off 225/45/15 R888s at the moment as well so I might just grab a set

I find it interesting that you would buy a tyre on "size" rather than performance. I guarantee the Dmack would out perform the Toyo. It will be more consistent and give better feed back.

I've now deleted some posts from this thread as they added nothing to the discussion. This applies to everyone on this board. Play civil or I hand out temporary bans. Simple as. Love and hugs.

I'm no tyre expert but IMO rims which stick out wider than the tyres and stretch the side-walls might look good (to some) but surely compromise the tyres performance? My understanding is that side-walls flex to keep the tread on the road whether cornering, braking or in a straight line - or have I missed something? Apart from that the rim must be vulnerable to damage by kerbing? Altogether a lose/lose situation. Cheers, Pewe.

Apart from that the rim must be vulnerable to damage by kerbing? Altogether a lose/lose situation. Cheers, Pewe. Depends how much they stick out, but unless you're talking about extreme stretch it's the opposite. 949 Racing have spent a lot of time testing various tyre sizes on various wheels and came up with some recommendations for what tyres are fastest on the wheels they do : 8" - 205/50 9" - 225/45 10" - 245/40 In with that, you have to look at what's available and also what fits the car. My setup is never going to be optimal because I have a staggered setup (9" / 10") and the MX5 favours the same all round. So my options are to stagger the tyres to match the wheels, and risk unbalancing the car, or go with matched tyres and risk the tyres not suiting the wheels. I decided (following advice on here, comments from Emilio from 949 Racing and advice on other forums) to go with matched tyres to keep the best balance. 225/45 is given as an option on the 949 Racing website for the 10" wheels, so as I won't have huge power it makes more sense to go with the smaller of the options. Having decided that, I needed to choose the tyres. The Dmack were intriguing because of the price but having spoken to a few people who have raced with them, they are pretty sketchy in the wet so no good for a road car. I'd spotted Demon Tweeks were offering 20% discount on various tyres, including the 225/45/15 R888s. I've used them before on another set of 6UL wheels, so know they are good. When I checked, Demon Tweeks were doing a good discount and I had an ebay voucher as well so ended up getting them pretty cheaply. My intention is to get them fitted and make a decision from there. If they don't look right I can easily sell the 10s, or the 9s, and make up a properly matched set. Russell

A small amount of stretch can actually help stop sidewall flex which can aid with turn in.

Got the tyres fitted, and it's too much stretch for me I think. I don't mind a bit, but the rim is clearly sticking out a good bit past the tyre. Difficult to show in a pic, but here's how they look So more thinking to be done ... at least there's no rush as the car won't be ready for several months. Options now are stick with what I have (works well but not keen on the stretched look), try the new Maxxis VR-1 in 245/40/15 all round (which would keep me very firmly stuck to the track!), or sell the pair of 10s and go to 9s all round with spacers. Interesting how things pan out sometimes ... been talking to Maxxis and they have just confirmed the VR-1 won't be road legal. Bit odd as the email said it's going through eu certification at the moment so wouldn't be out until July. It would be e marked but only for the track?
I've asked for clarification as my understanding was that it was meant to be a competitor to the R888s, RSR, A048s etc..
