As some of you may know, my car (apparently a low mileage 1.8 r-ltd) had the lowest WHP figures at Skuzzles, apart from a pickup truck, a canoe estate car(hehe- though only just) and Jordan's silver 1.6 (but she weighs half of me so is super fast anyway)
It produced more torque than bhp (102/96) and my limiter kicked in at only just over 6k rpm. Have sent Skuzzle an email, but in the mean time any thoughts on what's up with my little blue diesel mx5??
cheers

Just to ask the question, is it (to the best of your knowledge) completely standard?

My money is on the cam belt being a tooth out.

@horney - is the one tooth out thing easy to check, or is it a case of actually re-fitting it?

Cam cover off and count ribs between the top pulleys. I can't remember off the top of my head how many it should be. If that's OK then all front covers off and check the marks all line up.

Nineteen ribs between the marks on the cam pulleys. Plus of course piston 1 should be at top dead centre when the marks are at 12 o'clock. Or to make it easier to see, take off the next cover down and check the 4 o'clock mark on the intake and 8 o'clock mark on the exhaust cam wheel match the line on the back plate.

Thank you chaps, that sounds like something I can do P.S would any of this explain why I only hit just over 6k rpm though??

I thought the rev limiter was ECU-controlled??

Rev limiter is indeed ECU controlled. So that wouldn't explain a 6k limit. Maybe your rev counter under-reads (though I thought it was more common to over-read a little).
Coincidentally, many years ago I spent ages fruitlessly unpicking the ROM in my early 1.8 ECU and discovered that the "7,200 rpm" limit was actually set at 7,000 rpm.

Is there a crank angle sensor or something like that which sends engine speed or other info to the ECU?

The print out from the RR itself shows it dropping off the cliff at approx 6200rpm so don't think it's the rev counter. i
