I'll need to clean my pistons again now. why? the carbon buildup acts as a heat barrier that keeps the energy away from the aluminium of the piston, and they'll become covered soon enough anyway looking at the carbon build can tell you how the engine is running, both fuel / air mixture and the actual combustion itself Rich. They're covered in burnt oil at the minute, but if I can just not bother cleaning them then I'm fine with that as well IMG_20201117_192127 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

That looks like a great job they've done there, good stuff and for £20 and some biscuits, cannot complain - hope they were fox's

Just a quick update on where it currently sits, haven't spent as much time on it as I normally would but still some progress. I've now pulled the gearbox off, wasn't too bad a job once I realised I missed a bolt and that's why it wouldn't split from the block. A lot easier to access the top bolts when you've got the head off the engine. Combination of jack on the front of the box and rope through the turret, wrapped wound a breaker bar. It would only come down level, I couldn't lower one end first. As suspected, rear main crank was leaking, I'm hoping this is the last of the oil leaks from the engine. Replaced with a Mazda seal, used the Jass performance tool as I don't want to have to do this one again. PSX_20201230_194803 by Scott Reid, on Flickr PSX_20201230_194842 by Scott Reid, on Flickr The Exedy clutch I've had in 3 years hasn't seen much abuse and has held up very well, I'll be replacing it for a BOFI Racing Clutch Kit. PSX_20201230_194922 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Replaced the spigot in the flywheel ready for it to go back in, bought new input and output shaft seals for the gearbox. New seals: PSX_20210119_234316 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Old Seals: PSX_20210119_234332 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Spent some time trying to source the correct pulley bolt for the M62 Supercharger, turned out to be dirt in the threads (thankfully), just had a massive fear of stripping the threads. IMG_20210119_182132 by Scott Reid, on Flickr I've also sourced a drain plug for the M62 as it didn't come with one, there's a pinched oil seal behind the pulley needs measured and sourced. I've got to source and change the rear needle bearings and then filly the snout with oil. Then and only then is the supercharger complete. I'm not sure it was such a bargain after all! Anyway, next step is drill the holes for the door bars, I've got a new Ryobi cordless drill as my last drill packed it in. plan is to draw up some spreader plates for them once they are in position. Oh and finish up with cavity waxing the sills, once all of that is done, it'll be time to put the head back on. See how much more I get done in our current lockdown.

Yeah the Flex and Meisters seem quite comparable, I just hope they'll be night and day in comparison to the Dualtechs. Maybe they're just shot and need replacing. Do Tein last well or do you need to coat them in ACF50 like the HSD's? They come with a ZT coating which is there patent rust proofing on the threads I think, dampers are all powdercoated. I've not had them long enough to give you a definetive answer I'm afraid. Something else to note is they come in heavier than the meisters so thats also something to consider (theres a post in my project thread with exact weights I think). Slight thread revival as I was reading back a bit further. I've got HSDs on mine (fitted by a previous owner) and they are pretty firm, even on full soft. I do make them harder still for track stuff, which they do pretty well. On my old Subaru I had some HSDs fitted and they were too hard as well, so I got some MeisterR Zeta CRDs which were fantastic - very much night and day difference.

Thanks boggissimo, as feared then, I'll need to change out my suspension at some stage. These HSD's are probably great for track and drift, but god awful on local roads round here.

Made some more progress over the last couple weeks, I'm not exactly battering through everything, but I hope it'll be back together for the summer. Spent a couple evenings mocking up the door bars in place, there's a grommet hole on the rear bulkhead that I couldn't quite get to line up, spent a solid 2 hours on it, asked on a Facebook group and this seems to be the norm, I'll try refit the grommet when I bolt them in. Mocking up the other side took a lot less time after learning this. Apologies for the raft of tools/mess. PSX_20210123_200246 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Spreader bars were supplied with M10 bolts, nylocs and washers. Bit of digging shows they should have spreader plates, so I've measured, drawn up and currently waiting on these to be cut out of 3mm plate. I've bought new stainless hardware for refitting, just need some black silicone. Refitting/modifying the trim to fit round these is going to be a challenge. I might try pick up some spare pieces so I can mock one up first before butchering the final one. This weekend swapped out my speedo cable, with a replacement from Autolink, hopefully that cures my bouncy speedo needle. Also going to fit my laser dash dial surround/Freaky Parts dial rings. PSX_20210131_193053 by Scott Reid, on Flickr BOFI clutch arrived the end of January, so I spent Sunday getting everything refitted. Used blue Loctite on the flywheel bolts, apparently bolt holes in the crank aren't blind, so a sealant is required to stop oil leaking out, I used a lot as I don't want to have to do this again. Went to fit up the pressure plate and I could only get 1 dowel pin to line out up of the three, this seems to be a recurring issue as it was the same on the Exedy pressure plate. So what do you do to a brand new purchase, break out the round file, no turning back! Anyway, after a lot of filing/checking /more filing/damage new orange paint, it went on and torqued up to spec. Clutch alignment tool slides out nice and easy. PSX_20210131_191754 by Scott Reid, on Flickr By this stage I had frozen kidneys, so I called it a night. Next step is to try and get the gearbox back in it's home, a task I'm not entirely looking forward to. Oh and to top it off I've managed to lose a PPF bolt! Another order for Autolink!

Great progress for the time of year how cold it is, hopefully there's a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel?
What is the laser dash dial surround/Freaky Parts dial rings? Sounds interesting/bit different to the norm.

Sounds interesting/bit different to the norm. I've a poxy wee heater, I've decided you can only tell it's on by having it directly next to you full blast. If I won the lottery I'd get a garage with underfloor heating Laser dash surround is just a KG-Works style rep, he does customise them for you so it's not a direct replica. Freaky parts are metal gauge rings, should look good once all together with the Revlimiter gauge faces. I'll post up pictures when I've got it all together. In terms of getting it completed, intention was to swap the doors whilst it's up in the air this time, but I think the garage is too narrow for that, I'd be better served getting the gearbox on, head on, then moving the car around for the doors and wings. More long winded but would hopefully make it easier/less frustrating. ECU/Wideband I think will be after the cars back on the road with an MOT.

Good to see work still going on in the cold... I have moved on to small jobs i can do in the warmth of the house Are the door bars the gcfabrications ones, if so i still have these to fit but from what you are saying they wouldn't fit with bucket seats which would suck as i like my bucket seats. Sounds like they are a pain to fit as well. I thought they used existing holes at the front and i'm hoping at the back they can mount to my existing gcfabrications roll bar. Guess i might have to make a decision between Bucket Seats or Door Bars

Guess i might have to make a decision between Bucket Seats or Door Bars Yeah they are GC-Fab door bars, but these are the type that don't tie in with the cage. If you've got the bars that match up to the cage then I don't think you'll have the same issue, they bolt to the existing cage mounts on the rear bulkhead. Both types use 2 existing bolts down the front, so you don't need to do anything there. But, dependant on how wide you're buckets are you might have issues. If you're a lean machine with narrow buckets you'll probably be fine, I'm not a lean machine

Didn't get a chance to try fit the gearbox this weekend, but did spend some time Sunday evening transferring over the modified speedo cluster surround. I thought I'd chuck these up now rather than wait for another update. So originally I had Jass Performance needle caps, Revlimiter Gauges and a Carbon Fibre surround: PSX_20210207_205644 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Have since fitted the LaserDash surround with the Freaky parts gauge rings. PSX_20210207_204354 by Scott Reid, on Flickr PSX_20210207_204515 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Ideally I would have gone for the Jass Performance lensed gauge rings or a KGWorks unit but the money is better spent elsewhere for now.

The want is real!!! That looks spot on Scott, especially the dash lights, proper old school but cool I think the rings really add the most, the KG style will probably upset the purists, but 400 quid is much better spent on a supercharger bracket! I did get it customised so it's not a direct copy, but it looks really good in person so I'm happy. Car parts are much easier to get past the wife if they're retro styled or safety orientated

Whats that for, you mean another kind of gauge rings or dash surround?
