Hi all, Following on from my new members thread, this is my third MX-5, a 93' Eunos Roadster 1.8 with a Mazdaspeed B-Spec Stage 2 tune on it. I'll be honest I'm not 100% sure what that entails or what's actually left on the car, but I'm sure we'll find out. Car was won in a Facebook Lottery Bonus Ball Raffle, for the princely sum of £20.00. Amazing? indeed, however it had been used as a daily/drift mule and the engine does a nice impression of an oil burning smoke machine. It had also had a fight with an Astra so I'm told. I'll let the pictures do the talking: MX5 1-2 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-1 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-10 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-4 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-5 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-6 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-7 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-8 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 1-9 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Anyways, from what I can gather it's been imported in 2004, someone at some stage has looked after it. I'll save all the problems/whats been done for the next post. Cheers, Scott

Probably the best £20 you will ever spend. That's awesome.

So the car came with some modifications, I'll just list that which we've kept or refitted and not the bits I've sold: Dualtech HSD Coilovers (now unseized) GC Fab Roll Bar with Harness Bar & Spreader Plates Nardi Classic Silver Spoke Steering Wheel (now with added horn). Auto Connection Front Lip (not fitted yet). Replacement front wings (needing sprayed PZ). So far we've: - Replaced the welded 1.6 diff with Torsen 1.8 LSD. - Unseized all the HSD's and adjusted for daily driving. - Sourced and fitted a Cobalt cat-back. - Sourced and welded the rear deck back in. - Removed and refitted the roof correctly along with the cage, so it won't leak. - Sourced and fitted all interior trim. - Replaced seats with 2 Piece cloth tombstones, with speakers that work. - 80% of A/C delete. Still plenty to do and I've been sourcing parts for the car, since it's 160 miles away at my parents place: new clutch assembly, service items, engine seals. The main issue for now is the car is spewing out thick white smoke, when I got the car I was advised the piston rings were to blame, but who knows. I could really use some assistance on this one. We've carried out a compression test and the results were as follows: Wot/engine hot:Cylinder 1: 195 Cylinder 2: 170 Cylinder 3: 164 Cylinder 4: 170. Wot/engine hot/thimble of oil:Cylinder 1: 215 Cylinder 2: 188 Cylinder 3: 180 Cylinder 4: 180 Carbon test on the coolant result: MX5 3-2 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Failed! Edit: I should add that the coolant was low and the engine oil overfilled substantially (oil colour: very black!). Removing oil and replacing plugs improved marginally. Having never done something like this before the results don't really point 100% to the source, is anyone able to advise? I've sourced a replacement engine should the worst come to it. If anyone is able to advise it'd help push this on massively, in the process of trying to sell the daily to be replaced by the 5, to free up cash for an impending house deposit! All very grown up. Cheers, Scott

Probably the best £20 you will ever spend. That's awesome. Thanks Horney, indeed and just when I was at my lowest for having sold the NC a couple years before . The parts pile is now getting quite substantial, have a couple "car" weekends scheduled coming up....for when I'm not away looking at houses!

That Superstyle Garage sticker and the removed welded diff suggest it might have modified knuckles for more steering angle. You might want to check.

Ah cool. I don't think there's an issue with them but if you don't know they're fitted it would be a bit of a weird feeling.

20 squid? Bloomin heck! Looks worth saving, nice find! Now I'm just thinking of all the things I've bought for £20 in the last week, seems like wasted money now after seeing this haha! Looking forward to your progress!

Thanks guys, indeed total steal....and they have the cheek to say gambling is a mugs game!
Anyways, once we decide what to do with this engine we'll be close to renewing the MOT.
Anyone able to assist? Best to just swap it out and sell the original?

Sadly I can't help you with the engine and even more sadly I've got a 1.8 that came out of a '94 car that you could have had for a similar bargain. It's a bit tappy lifters but it's going cheap. I think carriage from Winchester to Glasgow would be excessive.

Thank you for the offer anyway, I've got a replacement engine sitting waiting to go in, it's just a matter of do I commit to it or try save the tuned engine. I got a response on Nutz suggesting take the cam cover/head off and asses whats what underneath: burnt oil, sufficient oil/water etc. That it's likely head related.

I'm by no means an expert but from what I know those compression figures don't look too bad. But white smoke would indicate coolant in the cylinders so head gasket most likely. That would also appear to match with your lack of coolant and the results of your gasket test.

If it were me I'd swap the engine and get the car rolling, then take my time to fix up the MazdaSpeed engine and put it back in when it's ready
