If it were me I'd swap the engine and get the car rolling, then take my time to fix up the MazdaSpeed engine and put it back in when it's ready Agreed. It's definitely worth repairing the Mazdaspeed engine

The best thing is even if you spend a grand or more on getting the car back in shape, that's still an absolute bargain!

Cheers guys, I think that's where I was leaning towards, just wanted to make sure the MS engine wasn't a simple fix. A head skim might resolve the issue but there is no guarantee and thats the issue. I know the replacement engine runs, so I'll get replacement rubbers sorted out and service it before we install. The MS engine might take a couple years before it goes back in, in the process of putting offers in for houses so my funds are away to vanish. Already spent about 40 times what I paid for the car! Decision made

I never trusted those Facepage raffle things, always assumed it was chancers.
Nice win though! And it seems it's something a little more special than the norm too, deffo worth trying to save! Looking forward to seeing more progress.

That Superstyle Garage sticker and the removed welded diff suggest it might have modified knuckles for more steering angle. You might want to check.
The steering lock on the manual-ised PAS rack is ridiculously good - it must rival a London Black Cab! I've no idea why you'd need more lol

Cheers everyone, indeed I was skeptical about the raffle but I'm glad I bought a ticket now.
I've a plan formulated now: - get the head off and inspect whats going on (look for signs of blow-by etc.), - if it's not totally gubbed get the head skimmed, - local guy has offered to help re-seat the valves, - change oil and filter, - get car through MOT, - Sell daily and cross fingers!
Parts and labor for all of that shouldn't be more than 200 all in so lets see how this goes, if it goes bang I've got a replacement ready!
Does that sound mental or the best/quickest way to get it back on the road?

Just because if I tell my girlfriend she won't give a prarrie canoe, I'll tell you guys instead... Oil filter and engine oil changed for fresh stuff at the correct level, drained coolant and refilled.......and white smoke is almost/potentially completely gone! Early days mind, but maybe servicing the existing engine is all it needs. This is good news people! The B-spec might not stand for Buggered-spec after all.

So with my first car weekend coming up this weekend, I've spent the last few weeks ordering all the bits and pieces I'll need for the engine service. By my own admission I've gone a bit bonkers, but with the sale of the S3 on my list of things to do, hopefully I won't bankrupt myself! Anyways, I've sourced a set of 15x7 ET30 wheels (5 spokes with some dish), getting some 195/50/15 T1R's to chuck on in the meantime. From my research these won't rub or require any arch work?

Just been sent a picture of the temporary wheels fitted: MX5 NA -14" by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 NA -14" by Scott Reid, on Flickr Check the arch gap Now the question is what colour to go with for the 15" wheels? Anthracite? Shadow Bronze? Gold? Red?

Finally had a whole weekend on the car, after spending the last 7 weeks accumulating parts. Managed to source a set of 15x7 ET30 unknown brand fake splits with a bit of dish for a decent price, these will be shod in 195/50/15 Toyo T1-R. Currently away getting powder-coated dark gloss bronze. MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr After seeing the custom gauges you can buy, I picked up a cheap set of lockwood yellow gauges and some green LEDS, might be marmite but I absolutely love it: MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Amazing what trim pieces you can pick up on the facebook pages: MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Now for the mechanical stuff, the current gearbox on end of street and back diff test showed the gearbox was...for lack of a better word shagged. The oil that came out: (can't quite see the lovely metallic sheen or the chunks sunk to the bottom) MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Old box (front) replacement box (rear) MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr As you can see above the rear crankshaft seal had a pretty serious leak, seal out ready to be changed (note the yellow writing from factory? "d004"?) MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Old clutch out MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr That moment you realise the lightened flywheel hasn't been pinched off the car MX5 NA 20/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr I'm guessing the engine is a BP-1? there are BP-1's everywhere! Anyways, list of things done: New Exedy Clutch assembly, Flywheel bearing, Rear Crankshaft Seal fitted. Tried changing ignition barrel to one from a complete lock set, but it's from a 94' and won't fit a 93' as the coulombs a different size, so need to exchange that. Anyway back up in 2 weeks so hopefully more to come, may even hit the road this year if this keeps up. Scott

In an effort to keep this up to date: in the downtime between car weekends the part hunt continues, but I've been doing a bit of research behind the car and its Mazdaspeed B-Spec Stage II origins.
From what I can find, A-Spec merely refers to a trim package offered, whereas B-Spec cars were fitted with: - Four stage adjustable shocks - Harder springs with 30mm drop. - Thicker anti-roll bars and strut braces - Harder shock mountings and lower bushings. - Harder engine mounts. - Up-rated Brake Pads. - Up-rated Clutch. - Lightened Flywheel. - High compression pistons and camshafts. - Uprated Manifold/exhaust system - Oil Cooler. - Short Shift. - VLSD and up-rated mounts.
The engine came in 3 stages of tune: Stage 1: 1.6L - 130bhp (N/A) 1.8L - 145bhp (N/A) Stage 2: 1.6L - 144bhp (N/A) 1.8L - 170bhp (N/A) Stage 3: 1.6L - 170bhp (Supercharged) 1.8L - 180bhp (Supercharged)
So this is good news, since the engine seems to only have been needing correct oil and a decent service, will know more soon.
A lot of the B-Spec parts are gone but just to document everything: - Four stage adjustable shocks (Replaced with HSD Dualtech). - Harder springs with 30mm drop (Replaced with HSD Dualtech). - Thicker anti-roll bars and strut braces (TBC). - Harder shock mountings and lower bushings (TBC). - Harder engine mounts (TBC). - Up-rated Brake Pads (TBC/likely long gone). - Up-rated Clutch (replaced with Exedy clutch assembly). - Lightened Flywheel (Confirmed). - High compression pistons and camshafts (TBC). - Uprated Manifold/exhaust system (Replaced with RSR 4-1 Manifold/Cobalt Catback). - Oil Cooler (Long gone). - Short Shift (TBC). - VLSD and up-rated mounts (Replaced with Torsen).
Will update when parts are back from powder coating.

Another small update as parts keep rolling in. Wheels are back from powder coating (Before): MX5 29/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr After: Decided to go with gloss bronze. MX5 29/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr MX5 29/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr As well as the strut brace brackets: MX5 29/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr The blue spare bumper that came with the car is off to get sprayed since the black one isn't in good condition, has the benefit of having all fittings/plastics: MX5 29/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Along with the blue wings as those that came on the car were "battered", although one had some rust that's been patched: MX5 29/08/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr More updates after the weekend (if everything goes well).
