Hi all.
I have play in my steering rack. I've checked UJs etc, and the play is definitely from the rack.
Is there any adjustment to this at all or is it a case of fitting a new rack that isn't worn?
Any help appreciated.

What mk, age and mileage? I think most of the early cars had a bit of play anyway. Can you post a vid?

IIRC steering usually gets 'interesting' when the track rods suffe wear where they connect to the rack - do you have any play there? If so, should be a relatively easy swap for new ones (if nothing's seized etc. etc. lol)
I need to get mine done shortly!
Is it a PAS rack? Is it still powered or is it de-powered?

Sorry, I should have said. It's a MK1 Eunos with 210000km on the clock.
The play is definitely from the rack itself. I got my fiancé to move the steering wheel while I lay under the car and the movement from the wheel gets transmitted to the rack perfectly but then there is no movement of the steering arms at all.
I tried again with the engine running as it is a power system, but it made no difference. Still some play in the rack.

The depowered racks need welding to remove any play - the powered setup uses microswitches or something like that to start the pump working, so there is some play that needs to be taken up, AIUI!
Have you had it long? If so. I'm guessing it's been getting worse?

Have you had it long? If so. I'm guessing it's been getting worse? I bought it in November, but due to a rebuild I've only started driving it in the last couple of months. Then to compound the issue, the wheel alignment was awful and has only just been sorted. So now that's done it's highlighted the play! I am considering buying another rack and depowering it anyway as I find the steering a bit light anyway. I did read in the depowering guide the necessity of welding two splines together to get rid of play that is normally taken up by hydraulic fluid, hence running the engine to see if that helped. But no!

Have you adjusted the big nut on the front? It's kindof a preload on the pinion...

Are the bolts holding the actual rack to the subframe tight? Mine had backed off slightly and the whole rack was moving!

Is there a pic of the nut you mean? I know someone referred to it in my thread about steering rack issues but I'm still not 100% sure which one it is... lol

Ah, that's what I meant, thank you for interpreting into English lol
Whereabouts are you in this green and pleasant dusty and burning land of ours? There might be someone nearby who's had it done so you can try it
I like it myself, but it does seem to amplify any play! lol

I'm based in Cheshunt, Herts in this dust bowl of a country!
The rack is secured ok, so not that I think. I've seen some reference to the preload online, so will try to dig up a guide to setting it and see if I can improve matters like that.
Being quite a well travelled rack, I little wear may well have crept in.
As far as depowering the rack goes, some people have said it is too heavy for normal driving. My previous car (TVR S3) was a manual rack with a iron boat anchor of an engine over the front and I got on with that really well so hopefully it would be similar to that.

I'm no drift king YO!! but I think it fair to say that the depowered rack would be harder to 'catch' if you got the back out, especially unintentionally, unless you have the skill to do that thing where you let the wheel spin and then grab it when it's pointing in the right direction!
Parking in tight spaces is a biatch, though, as the wheels 'flop over' past a certain angle, so you have to He-Man them back past that point lol. It's not that hard when you're moving, though, even just crawling out of a space - the missus drove mine for a while and she didn't shout at me about it, so it can't be that bad lol

I’ve driven a fair few Mx5/ with depowered racks. Once rolling they’re not much different from a PAS car. Parking is effort though.

If you've driven almost any small car pre '90 you'll cope with it...
