Still in bits Rain, wind, applying for my own job, applying for another job, family stuff... More time in the day would be nice, or the ability to not need to sleep! It would be much easier with a garage also - at least that way you can leave things halfway through and just come back to them, instead of having to pack everything away and then start again another day. Ho hum! Still, when I get made redundant I'll have lots of spare time on my hands lol

So I'm useless... To check with the experts, if I may impinge on your generosity once again: - if the head being hand-tightened down but then unbolted again has let oil from the top end (added to lubricate the cam lobes during engine rotation by hand for the purpose of checking valve clearances) seep through and create a layer of oil on both sides of the head gasket somehow will cleaning it off thoroughly with absorbent kitchen roll or similar mean the gasket is still acceptable to use? - if the peak of the cam lobes have very slight rust from, presumably, being outside without the cam cover on but with a thick towel covering the top end and the bonnet in place, will they be fine to use because they'll be fully lubricated? (Please say yes... ) On the plus side, the film of oil has stopped the block face from rusting at all, and the valve clearance test seems to have made zero indentations in the plasticine within the piston face cut-outs. If it would stop raining and/or blowing a gale for a whole day once in a while, I might be able to get more done... I want a workshop and garage, dammit.

Dry the gasket, and torque the head down, any slight rust on the cans will go in the first few seconds, or wipe the cam lobes with any oily cloth first, 99% will probably come off. Good luck

wannabe , is the gasket metal or graphited? if metal then don't worry if graphite faced then just wipe & inspect, the graphite is quite resilliant so probably fine otherwise, get it assembled Rich.

'tis a gasket from Mr Mazda, so I'm not sure which of those it is... lol Weather looks appalling for the next couple of days, but am going to attempt to make progress before/after it rains!

It only takes a few minutes to torque it down, hardest job is lifting the head (and inlet manifold) back on. Did mine a few weeks ago with a dodgy back, no fun!

The inlet gubbins is currently split from the head so it's half as heavy as it could be, but it's still not light with everything else bar the cam cover installed, lol. It wouldn't be so bad if you could get more than a finger or two through the lift hangers - it's hard work with only a couple of digits! Managed to not drop it on the collets and destroy the face so hopefully it will be ok, lol.

So....... Wazzitrunlike? Rich. ps. Mazda gasket is graphite coated Thanks for the confirmation on the gasket Head is now on! Took an age because I was trying to make sure all the surfaces were clean, all the plasticine was cleaned off the pistons, all the oil was cleaned off the gasket, there wasn't anything on the bore walls... 80/20 rule?! Your special thread-clearing bolts were excellent BTW, thank you very much - don't think I would have been able to clear the blocked threads without them! Now just need to do inlet, crank pulley, exhaust, alternator, fuel lines, belts, connectors, check timing... Supposed to have done more today but big fat fail so far, and it's getting too dark to work outside by half-4! Did buy a Torque wrench for the crank pulley bolts (12-17Nm), though - I bought a 20-100Nm originally but needed the 12-60Nm, at which point I realised I should have bought the 60-300 so I had a bigger range but didn't overlap so much... lol

Progress today - removed the spark plugs, spray-copper-slipped the threads (because I forgot to do it yesterday), replaced and torqued them to 15Nm.
Wooowwwwww... lol
