I decided to buy my first die cast model car the other week. After looking at the outrageously priced Ignition Models, I went for a vastly cheap alternative. 1:24 scale by Jada on ebay for around £24. Or a tenth of the price. On the plus side this body is metal rather than plastic "resin". Both come with similar mods like kits and being lowered. Although this Jada example is a tad OTT in some respects. For a start the wheel arches are ridiculous. Many parts are attached by someone melting them together with a soldering iron. So it's pretty basic assembly. Although this offers a good basis to start modding. There are a few basic colours: Red, Blue, Black. The wheels are not a million miles away from my Enkei, so they will do.
The overall idea is to make this like a mini model version of my own car. Feel free to post your own projects up here. Assuming you want to waste loads of time faffing about lol.

Rear bumper cut
Polycell paint stripper is half the cost and ten times better than Nitromors

I made a new rear spoiler from a solid lump of aluminium. Secured by some hex bolts and nylock nuts. The original item was rubber so couldn't be painted at a later stage. Front indicators were ditched. Holes filed out for TSI vents Front spoiler also reduced a huge amount Front headlights cut out so I can make some Jass items later on.

The seats were totally wrong winged bucket style. So I cut, filed and polished them down to Cobra Cubs
The seats are fine. However that center console has to go!
Dash changed from LHD to RHD, after much filling, cutting, sanding, smoothing. New instrument binnacle made
Radio panel blanked, then three guages were added. Along with a center console delete and Nakamae gear surround made from scratch. Still in bare primer

I will post some more when I get a chance. On the to do list... make a proper rear cage, widen the stance, paint the interior matt black, make some Jass lights, make a bonnet cut to match mine (when the real one is finalised), make a metal exhaust, craft a V6 from a block of aluminium with a tiny Holley plenum, respray all metal parts, refit the lights and assemble for display in my workshop. Yes... a mental waste of time haha

That Tamiya one looks more reallistic than mine! Although it doesn't come with any cool modded parts. So it will be a lot of work if you want to make all those bits from scratch. Of course if your car is more OEM the Tamiya would be better.
I loved the Ignition Models Miatas. Shame they are plastic and £200-300. Mental!

there is scope to make anything, time / imagination & stupidity help for that I've got a 15cc 4 cylinder, sidevalve watercooled engine in the workshop (in a draw below the milling-machine) that I've been threatening to rebuild for a few years..... one of these.... www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/images/Seal1.jpgRich.

I only have one other model car, buts it's Radio Controlled. Very vintage, 1986 1/8 scale Garbo Gepard 3. However it has many era correct mods and some of my own. All from new old school parts. About five years in the pipeline, on and mostly off. One day when it's finished I will get to start up its little nitro engine for the first time ever.
Wow, there's a lot of work to turn the cast pieces into a working engine!

I converted the USA numberplate aperture into a UK version. A small aluminium bar was added to the top and contoured to match the body
Hole cut for the V6. To be made from aluminium block later on...

Billet of aluminium ordered. I will carve the engine from one end of this using a hand file. I may be a while haha

The original model's wheels were tucked well inside of daft arches. Even with more realistic flares, the wheels are still too narrow. So I added spacers outside to bring the brakes further out. Spacers were also added inside to help me secure the wheels better later on.
Calipers painted black. Discs painted more of a steel grey
