Hey, thought I would add a build thread here as well as nutz, will be copy and pasting over the first page or so but I will summarise. I'm from down South Devon, owned an s14 200sx for 9 years with many, many fun times had, probably done over 40 drift days in that car and still quite passionate about it although don't want to get as serious into drifting as I was before will definitely still be doing some local practice days. Due to the crazy prices they are going for and parts prices being ridiculous, I took the plunge and sold the 14, then moved onto mx5's..... Originally I was only meant to get 1 as a cheap drift car but then ended up buying another.

Here's the first one, a 1.8 icon edition with 6 speed and hopefully still has the torsen fitted. Named Max, Bear in mind originally I aimed to drift this one, picture and video:

But then ended up buying another not long after, turbo 1.8 5 speed and as this one is still has mot and already has a welded diff, plus it isn't a special edition or anything I decided to concentrate on this one first to go drift with and generally drive about (hopefully soon as hasn't moved anywhere yet...) it needs some tlc though as previous owner, well, just watch the video lol. Hopefully come back to the Icon as more of a restoration when the turbo one (Max 2.0) is up and together. Pics and video:

I post using the BBCode option (lower left of screen in desktop view) then if I want to see a preview just switch to 'Preview'

Thanks Zed, didn't realise that was a switchable tab as it automatically came up in the preview window, my bad, cheers lol.

So moving on, here is how I found the ECU in the turbo mx5, literally just hanging about. Got rid of the extra non working alarm then tidied the ecu and wideband wireing up somewhat. The AFR and boost gauge weren't doing anything when I picked the car up. Now they both work and I've checked the wideband goes through the warm up procedure, seems to read ok once running so that's good news.

Good enough for now just to try it out:

Next was the turbo return pipe, this was wobbling about so removed the fitting and added a couple of dowtey washers (sorry no pic of them) this stopped the fitting bottoming out and spinning around and went up nice and tight, winner! Then also replaced the return pipe hose that I could see had been rubbing through on the subframe...

Then found a broken earth on the rear ppf/diff area so re-crimped the end on and fitted new bolt after having to undo the rounded bolt with a pair of molegrips.

Next on the list was to make a start on the exhaust, removed the backbox and got rid of the knackered heatshield as that wasn't doing much... As you might have seen in the video it was blowing at the rear box where one of the hangers was starting to rip off.

Welded that up and then re-inforced the other 2 hangers:

Polished up the tip just to see what it comes up like, not too bad!

That's as far as I got with it then re-fitted, now want to order some more tube/flanges to re-make where the CAT was previously. It's been replaced with a flexi so the exhaust has 2 flexi's at the front... Think I am starting to paint the picture the previous owner wasn't 100% on his upkeep lol. It's all fixable though so hopefully can turn it around into a reasonable car. Next on the list was to try and make the car gloss as I really don't like the matt black, it's been painted with what feels like some klinda stone chip, thought it was just aerosol but think its something else now. Anyways managed to pick up some panels in gloss for cheap-ish. Had to thinners off a terrible repair on the rear bumper, before:

After some elbow grease: Sadly the sand paper marks underneath won't polish away as too deep, some people should not be allowed near paint work!

Also fitted some slightly better offset wheels at this point. The gloss is 10x better in my book, the car was actually previously silver but then one of the previous owner's changed to black on log book which I'm guessing is when it went matt black.

Next on the list was to have a look at the lock situation. Decided some basic rack spacers were the way to go and with just a bit of grinding back to the lower arm lip I had enough clearance and gained an 1/8th of a turn each way, nice! I also made a video explaining how rack spacers worked...

Then I fitted the gloss bonnet and front wings, passenger side has also had a repair before but this wasn't as bad as the rear bumper so have left it as is for the minute.

I definitely prefer the gloss!

Quite a lot of filler in the quarter but no obvious big dents, there was a small previous patch repair sort of half way up the arch so that's why I cut out a bit more than I usually would. Inner arch section next!

Some progress, inner sill repaired then seam welded the inner arch, doesn't 'have' to be done but any extra strength I can give the old tin can can't be a bad thing! Then coated for some protection.

Got carried away and forgot to take any pics until I had pretty much fully welded the arch on... Getting there.

Oh yes both my 5's need new legs... I already have one set of repair panels ready. Just be another job for myself as and when, probably before MOT time I expect. Thanks for asking though

So will be doing a bigger update next post as done a lot to the car in the last few weeks, mainly getting it ready for a local drift day which happened Saturday. Trying to catch up on footage too, so here's the latest vid which is mainly about what I mentioned in previous posts but will be another out soon so feel free to subscribe if you haven't already

I managed to get the inner arch in primer, stone chip the bottom part of the sill and start some filler work. This had to be sped up rather quickly due to needing to do other bits to the car ready for drifting, so rubbed back roughly to shape and covered in filler primer to get it back smooth-ish.

Then decided to sell the black leather seats that were fitted:

And started to pull the carpet out, can see it's had a roll bar fitted previous going by the cut outs in the top metal cover.

Right 3rd drift day, sorry for no update with pics etc, was in a massive rush but basically managed to spray most of the car just in time for the BHP show drift demo's, great day, had a few issues but talk about them in the video and will try to update on here with what I do. Car did really well running in the super hot weather and was a good comparison for me as done the same event and layout pretty much twice before in my old 200sx.
