As per my other thread, clutch death is imminent If one is to do a 'proper job' getting it changed, would the following be a complete list of things to replace? (mk1 NA) Release Bearing Clutch Plate Clutch Cover Spigot Bearing Front cover gasket? www.mx5parts.co.uk/gearbox-front-cover-gasket-mk1-25-speed-p-4765.htmlAnd changing the flywheel for a lightweight version is a straight swap with nothing else needed?? All advice much appreciated!

get a gearbox inputshaft oilseal and (if you're dropping the flywheel?) a crankshaft rear oilseal Rich.

Front cover gasket? And changing the flywheel for a lightweight version is a straight swap with nothing else needed?? Front cover gasket only needed if you're changing the gearbox input shaft oil seal. Lightweight flywheel should be a straight swap. Well worth doing as long as you don't go too light.

Thanks for the replies, chaps I don't think I have any issues with the gearbox seals / gaskets, or the crankshaft seal, and I am worried about causing new issues if I disturb them... lol I can't visualise the arrangement so need to go and find some pictures!

Interesting 'side-by-side' comparison of a lightened flywheel vs stock that I found:

Stick with stock?

Maybe... Am thinking that when it's apart for the clutch, it would be the ideal time to get the flywheel swapped to see if I like the lightened version - I've not had one before and I do like the revvy nature of the 1.6 - as it would save £££ in labour and 'scratch that itch' / be an interesting experiment. If I hate it then, errrrr, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it lol

Okay, I didn't think removing the whole gearbox and gearstick assembly was going to be required, but I guess it makes sense as it's not like it can be moved out of the way anywhere...
No way I could do this on the drive! lol

It’s the gearbox out or the engine, your choice…

No way I could do this on the drive! lol If you can get the car raised enough that you can roll around underneath, then it can be done on a drive. The biggest pains when I did mine were reaching and undoing the bellhousing to engine bolts, removing the intake/fuel rail to get at the starter motor bolts, and getting it lined up again to go back on properly. Also watch out that you put the pressure plate on the correct way round - it will fit both ways but only one way works!

I've done it on a real lift, on jack stands and on a quick jack.
It's not that hard to do on the driveway. As long as it is flat and you have time.

Thanks chaps, I like your confidence Time and a flat driveway are both sadly lacking, though lol, so it is going to be chequebook mechanics this time round... !

Well, I probably shouldn't have started looking at doing everything while it's apart...
Is there a gasket or seal between the gearbox bell housing and the mounting face on the engine?
I don't think I've seen one... which has confused me, because surely the friction plate / pressure plate / fork / release bearing all need to be in a closed environment that won't get any foreign material in it?

Other things I'm looking at on the list, hopefully in order from engine to gearbox and with correct part numbers...:
Crankshaft rear seal (BP05-11-312) Oil Pan half-moon rear seal / gasket (B6F4-10-428)
Flywheel Flywheel bolts x6 (F201-11-511A)
Clutch Spigot bearing / Pilot bearing (F801-11-303))
Exedy Clutch kit (in lieu of friction plate B634-16-460C/ADM53225N and cover/pressure plate B634-16-410)
Cover bolts x6 (9YA0-00-804) Cover bolt washers x6 (9997-10-800)
Fork/Arm dust boot (FE86-16-214)) Clutch Release bearing (B622-16-510)
Gearbox front cover gasket (FE50-16-225A) Gearbox input shaft seal (H501-17-103)

Just get a clutch kit and spigot bearing.
Stop worrying.
Hope this is quicker than the head gasket saga….
