Mark in Wales said it might be the cam seals too or the head Canoeed or just the engine was really angry at me and had a hissy fit lol.
My local mech today has looked at it for 2 hours and ran it for two hours. Compression was fine and he could not find any leaks and said the head gasket was perfect.. But was stumped to figure out where the water was going. Best he came up with was worn hose clamp. Silicon hoses and ally clamps on the list of things to get any way.
As for the oil leak he said he cleaned it up and had a look and thinks it was probably just an angry engine after 20 minutes around silverstone national.
This is relieving news for me yet i am still topping it up and carrying around oil and water in the car.. Never mind.
Its off to see an expert tomorrow in mark @ totalmx5 repair tomorrow for my second opinion.
Its a make or break few weeks for the engine. Wales tomorrow. Comb next week. Rolling road day with you lot the week after!
On general track days how long do you guys run out for.? 15 to 20 minute sessions through out the day?

Yes 15 - 20 min sessions is the norm. Often do 8 to 10 sessions on a day if I can.
They're tough little buggers though. Skuzzles mk1 racer did a full 8 hour endurance race and then a whole season of Max5 racing on one old engine.

Ah that is good to know. I think i would only manage about 5 sessions in a day atm. An hour to cool down a bit and top up after each session
What happened to his engine after all that.!?

He took it out and rebuilt it as it was starting to smoke a bit. I see to recall it had done over 100k road miles before it he raced it.

I usually do a little over 20 mins at a time, more if I'm having a bit of fun with someone.

leaking out the rocker gasket all the way round.. sealed that up some blue goo was pissing out the cas o ring. put a new ring on. water leak was the back of the engine spraying onto the top of the gearbox. put k seal in the rad and so far so good.
Run it hard for over 3 hours back from saturday club in wales.. ran faultlessly.

We use that stuff in the race cars. Regular changes are more important.

Following discussions in a thread I was reading (on nutz??) I'm wondering if I should swap to 5w50 oil - currently running 5w40 synthetic (from Asda ) and it does seem to be going through it at a fair rate. It also has oil pressure at about 1 on the dial when idling and hot, maybe even a little lower when the oil is getting low. Perhaps a 5w50 would keep the swift quietening of the HLA noise the 5 rating brings, but the 50 would be a bit thicker so pressure might be better and perhaps it won't drink so much? I don't want internal drag issues, though. I need to log when I fill it up really - I'm spoiled by the missus' car that seemingly never requires any maintenance whatsoever and never uses oil (good job as she does Canoe all to look after it ), so need to remember that my old french motors used to use about 1 litre per 1000 miles!

Reckon I will stick with 10/40 for now. For a daily with that is doing track stuff monthly how often should I be changing??

I think it will depend on if you're really giving it death or just doing 20 minutes of having fun on a mixed-ability trackday - if you're doing a trackday on a hot summer's day with lots of sessions and lots of heat, it might be worth doing a change before and after to make sure you're in tip-top condition.
Extra cost, though!
