So after a few trackdays and yesterdays hillclimb I am interested in doing more structured competition stuff. I want to keep with roadgoing classes I like the idea of hillclimb - the 4a class sounds fun, i'd have to lose the ME221 and go back to standard ECU (not an issue) or just stay in the up to 2000cc road going www.gurstondown.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Eventregs16.pdfThe only cost is the personal safety equipment for myself - helmet, gloves and overalls mandatory to MSA regs. Any advice on where to buy, what to avoid etc for track days I have been using an old motorbike helmet!!

Ah ha! Welcome to a slippery slope. AFAIK the MX5 class means the car must be bog standard. Pretty sure you're not allowed anything other than pads and an exhaust. Worth checking out the regs on that one. I run my supercharged car in Series Production over 2000cc classes (supercharger adds a 1.6 multiplier to the cc). Raceway can be expensive but you can pick up some bits cheap. I use the cheapest FIA suit and boots that Sparco make along with (not required by the regs) OMP long johns, turtle neck and balaclava. Gloves I don't know how much they were as they were a present. Helmet is a Bell Sprint with HANS posts. I bought this because I knew I'd be doing circuit racing at some point and HANS is mandatory. My opinion is if you're running buckets and harnesses you might as well go HANS as well if you can afford it. ore safety gear the better. Anyhow, I bought all that from Demon Tweaks at Autosport in Jan 15 and got a total discount of £150 at the show. Well I say discount, I used it to essentially get a "free" Momo Prototipo for the car. Best helmet on a budget is these guys: www.v2sport.com/v2super-vent.htmlCar prep is simple. You need yellow tape round the earth lead from the battery, a sticker showing which way is off on the ignition barrel, stickers pointing to your tow eyes. Tyres vary according to local regs so check what they do and don't allow. All this also applies to sprinting which is the same as hillclimbing, only on a flat. I think that's it for now. Any more questions just ask!

Cheers for that Had a quick look at the regs and the mx5 class is bog std apart from exhaust and pre TB air intake, brakes must be mx5 but you can use any pads (Hardly use em anyway!!!) I just need to swap my ecu? I'm probably going to use my free entry to Gurston on 24th to get a feel for it before I spend dosh but I think I will be doing it at some point! I reckon about £500 gets you the budget overalls helmet and gloves? Do you need master cutoff switch also on the car?

No master cut off required. Just remembered you also need a fire extinguisher. Handheld is fine.

i am watching this. i hope to end up racing in the next year or two If you want to get a taste of competition events then i suggest getting involved with the javelin sprint series runs outside the msa its basically anything goes as long as its safe to track day levels. Not experience needed apart from a driving license. Huge fun there is usually 60-70 cars booked in so plenty of ranges of driver level and cars and plenty of classes to go into. Woodbridge and snetterton are the last 2 rounds plenty of space in each bit of a journey but its well worth it, sighting laps 1 practice laps and 8-9 timed runs.

you don't need a harness or roll bar for MSA events, probably recommended but I have been running a stock car all year, no problems anywhere, I just turn up stick some numbers on and a timing strut and off I go, oh on the mk3 I have to put the tow eyes in of course, job done. regarding gear, I used AWS in kent to get a suit made to my specific fatboy size, lots of material so expensive but if you have a normal shape you should be fine picking up something a lot cheaper, my helmet is a cheap xtreme ii from Hedtec I picked up cheap gloves from Plays-kool which seems to sell a lot of things at a reasonable price. As for events you might want to try some autosolo this year to get you self into the spirit before entering some other stuff if you are not ready to commit to gear, doesn't require any gear but very competitive with more seat time for the money than any hill or sprint, just not as fast or fancy which puts some off. I think the Gurston class restricts quite a lot and quite restrictive in terms of do you really want to do the same thing over and over, not for me, there are lots of places to visit through the year that will provide more excitement to Gurston where a restricted car for that championship may feel hobbled elsewhere. Lots of other MX5 class championships out there, Bristol motor club do one as do the Hillclimb and sprint guys where you try a few venues and disciplines with events all over the country.

Mainly picked the Gurston events as a try out cos I'm 20 mins away! The Bristol MC seem worth a look - I considered them on the past and almost got round to joining Auto solos do look like fun

To be fair if you are close I can understand that, competed against a few of the guys in that class this year, they are a good bunch.

I was thinking of just doing the Gurston mx5 class but as I have the attention span of a goldfish I'm not going to tie myself to just that. I'm only doing it for a laugh so bring on the turbos!
