Going boosted ends up with you competing against some serious metal. I end up against a 570bhp Mustang in a lot of events I do as well a V6 turbo Alpine GTA and 400bhp+ Nissan 200SX. Still beat them occasionally though!

It's surprising what you can be quicker than in an MX5, its lowish weight and decent balance gives it some surprising ability, been to quite a few events this year in the HSA A2.1 class which restricts me to 1A road rubber yet I'll be up there with things from the next class and beyond that should blow me away, makes me wonder what the car will be capable of once it has stick track rubber and a bit more tuning. Think I may have been quicker than that same Mustang (Alex Peters) at Snetterton. Feel if I had forced induction on my Mk3 it could take on anything, it's so slow on the straights

I'm frankly a terrible driver, on more than one occasion I've been told I handle the wheel like I'm wrestling a badger. So I'm not worried about what I'm up against with a fi mx5. I think it does mean I'll have to run a HANS device tho if not in roadgoing class?

You'll still be road going with FI. You only move out if you remove all the interior and start adding massive wings etc.

The only bit I've removed is the centre arm rest as it annoys the crap out of me! So in that case I wouldn't need a HANS device. I just want a track car that I can do some events in. My worry is spending a grand on safety gear that I'll only use a couple of times. I'd never wear a race suit on a trackday.

Yup - thats my worry - expensive race suit, gloves, boots etc and i'd feel a bit of a tool in a NA mx5 doing a hillclimb! What is ridiculous is that a decent suit costs the same as a decent roll bar - i know which i prefer!!

Ive just read up a bit on autosolos - they are more about agility - which is probably good in a 5 but I like planting my right foot - i think id probably get a bit bored, might try one one day though. I just had a look at some local car clubs - I'm not a great one for joining stuff but it seems that being a member of a club gets you entry into events near me we have www.bdcc.org.uk/www.wessexcarclub.com/Forum/index.phpJust worried they might be a bit like the Wessex MX5OC - coffee mornings and raffles!! perhaps we could have a Mighty5s car club and be MSA registered - is that possible Horney!!

driftmonkey You can spend less than £500 to get going. Roll bar in roadgoing is non essential so you won't fall foul of the regs. RicksterYes, joining a club gives you your clubmans licence that allows you to compete, any club will do, they are worth joining and going to a meet, people are typically even better in real life than on forums and it can be informative and mostly involve chatting about cars, events and drinking beer No time to be bored at a solo you are busy due to lots of runs and marshalling, you will be flat out albeit in lower gears, putting the car off balance etc, really getting to play with the 5s agility, which lets face it is all it has going for it, on track and some hills you have a couple of corners connected by overly long straight bits which are boring even in my modded 5 and of course higher speed limits the possibilities for experimentation, that plus all the waiting around in between runs can be a drag, though to be fair you meet some great people so can have a laugh but not a lot of actual driving.....why do I do it again LOL

I think you still need MSA membership, plus a MSA Nat B non race competition licence - its £43 AFAIK thats it (this is for MSA approved Hillclimbs, sprints, etc) there are non MSA race series like Javelin which have less regs

This is not a 2017 plan for me, as I have an expensive few months ahead of me this year with my motorbike, and then a few more with the missus wanting a 'proper' holiday...
so I'm aiming for autosolo experience, a few trackdays here and there, and a gathering of safety equipment for a championship the year after.
This is definately a handy reference list though... will hang onto this one!
