Hi Folks, A check of my toy fund and boredom has resulted in an order to Fab9 for a set of Supertech valves springs with fitting kit and an 85mm bore Cometic Head Gasket. So it looks like a trip to Walmart for a Bigger Suitcase or a hard carry on case is needed. Just hope the parts arrive at the Hotel before I fly home at the end of next week !!!!
I need to find room for a decent bottle of Duty Free Rum as well.
$496 dollars excluding shipping from Fab9 = £390 GBP
£696 Pounds from Bofi
So Thank you Work for sending me to USA to do a bit of MX5 shopping
My Per Diem and away from home allowance will cover the parts cost so another Win for me.
And I can not tell you why I am working in the USA or what I am doing so don't ask. !!!!!
Cheers Dickie

I am certain that you will of course be declaring your purchase and paying 20% VAT on it when you arrive home, if you have not already done so

Spent the entire morning waiting for a simple procedure to be done so that I could carry on with my work. It was nice watching an Osprey catch fish though and being paid for it by Uncle Sam !! Managed at least three hours work !!

Failed my MOT on emissions! Turned out they were testing my car based on the date of importation, 2005, rather than the date of manufacture, 1991. Pointed out the mistake, retested and passed. No advisories.

Hi Folks, My Cometic 85mm Head Gasket has now arrived at the Hotel. No Valve springs in the box !! Emailed the vendor to see if they are being shipped direct from Supertech ?? Stress level starting to rise because if they are not here by Thursday I will have to ask for a refund or get them shipped to my UK work address.
Saw a Pair of Ospreys flying about one fishing and one colleting some nesting material. More interesting than watching paint dry !!!
Cheers Dickie

Hi Folks,
I am now safely back in Blighty with my Swag from Fab9tuning.
Us Border Force had a rummage in my case which means they X rayed it and decided the contents looked dodgy but they did not bend the head gasket for me.
I decided that one bottle of Decent Rum and a bottle of Baileys was all I could manage to carry on the plane.
So all that is holding me back on the engine is dealing with the cylinder head.
Paying Money to have it skimmed and valve seats re cut for the big valves as well as some bowl work then re shimming the valve stems.
Cheers Dickie

Started trying to free up the piston rings with solvent, a la atlex. Got 5 litres of paint thinners (mostly toluene) and have chucked a couple of ~200ml doses through already, cylinder 3 it all went through in 10 minutes, so that's my main suspect at the moment - the others were all slower to drain through, suggesting the rings are sealing better in 1, 2 and 4.

I chucked a few litres of thinners through the cylinders, including a bit of air pressure to help it squeeze past, and it seems to have improved slightly but it's still bad. I thrashed it at a sprint over the weekend and it was like the red arrows leaving a smoke trail. It smokes most at startup after sitting, and then on full throttle, doesn't puff out on deceleration and isn't really visible at idle after the initial oil has blown out. I really don't think bad valve stem seals would flow enough oil to make that amount of smoke at full throttle, so think it must be the oil control rings.
I have heard that it is possible to get the sump off with the engine still in the car if you drop the gearbox, anyone done this? A couple of weeks working on my back under the car doesn't sound great. I don't see that it would be any better of a job to pull the gearbox back, drop the sump and get the rotating assembly out from underneath than it would be just to take the engine out altogether, which means I might as well sort out and fit the spare engine instead.
Obvs it's an unknown used engine so might have its own issues, hence I will probably start rebuilding it will some clean and fresh bits. The spare one is an NB 1.6 so has a few differences but I'm planning to just pretend it's an NA and swap in the inlet camshaft with the CAS notch. Any other things I should look out for with the NB into NA 1.6 swap?

Hi, You might not need to swap the camshaft.
On the VVT 1800 engines the inlet camshaft still has the notch for the CAS so it might be the same on the 1600cc.
Just check all the sensor plugs as they might have been upgraded which will mean swapping the sensors from your old head or buying new ones to instal to match the car.
It looks like I will be out Playing with your father at Wiscombe in September.
Cheer Dickie

Definitely need to put an NA intake cam in the NB 1.6 head, I took the cam cover off the other day and it definitely doesn't have one – doesn't have a CAS either so need to remove the blanking plate and transfer the CAS across.
Having had quite a faff with new sensors lately I'll probably swap the old ones over from the NA engine too.
Might also fit the ITBs!

a while ago I had taken the windscreen wiper mec. apart. Cleaned, greased and put back. But I had missed the proper angle on the motor braket thing. So when I turned the wipers off they would always come back up a little bit. Well finally took the braket/gear thing off and set it up again and now my wipers stop where they are supposed to. Yeah I know it's not much but man! is it satisfying
