If you're doing the rad, definitely hoses too. I did it the other weekend, it's a couple of hours job but dead simple. I replaced all the compression clips with jubilees too
Take the thermostat out and stick a hose in to flush the engine coolant lines through too. Backflush it from the opposite end just to get any crap out and you'll be good to go.

Off I go to MX5 parts to get ready.... lol Also, stupid question, how much coolant does a mk1 mx5 take? I take it you buy stuff either pre diluted or DIY dilute lol. Will go and take a look.

thermostat: use a genuine mazda item to replace the old one. hoses: look at fast5s.co.uk for silicone hoses - stoney racing (on ebay?) or ASH also do hose kits but not always specific. ally rads: fast5s do good ally rads too, if you haven't already ordered one. any ebay rad around 80 quid+ will be good enough, but you will need to buy a little 2-3mm ally stock to make up some brackets to fit it correctly. if you are rich, mishimoto, but they're all more or less the same and give better-than-oem performance. waterpumps: the genuine mazda waterpumps are the best and as long as yours is fine it will be better than a non-mazda part.. if your mileage isn't too high you will be fine. coolant: find a decent source of de-ionised water with the unmixed stuff, or be sure to use a 50/50 coolant premixed. last tech tip.. if you flush the coolant with a new rad be sure to remove the expansion tank and expansion tank hose and clean the prarrie canoee out of all of that too - consider sticking it in a dishwasher or using a pressure hose. after a 20 years they tend to collect .. gunk, that sticks to the bottom of it: including any radweld and engine detritus that will have cooked off the top of the rad. don't be too shocked by why you find.. it will be ugly and brown like chocolate milk - rusty metal particles mixed with the things that came out of the coolant mix, etc. it's ok as long as it doesn't resemble mayonnaise, you should be fine. also about sellers mx5parts are good but there are alternatives check out www.autolinkmx5.com/ also see mighty5s.com/thread/351/autolink-discount-code for discount code. moss may start doing more mx5 parts one day, we hope. lastly, can we change your name on this forum, please ? please.

I used IL Motorsport radiator and hose and jubilee set, all from MX5 parts because it was easy, on a bank holiday 10% offer and I would get it the next day. (Impatient sod) Book says 6 litres of coolant, but with the bigger rad I used 7 litres of 50/50 NON SILICATE coolant mix with deionised water.

So it looks to me a half OK rad can be got for £80, hoses, £70, Coolant, £25. Then some labour and work with a mate and jobs a good'un? I'll try for £200 off the asking price. Cambelt and water pump have not been done. But it's relatively low mileage at 90k (Miles) That IL motorsport rad is beautiful!! Oh and atlex... you can change it to Mk1Found if all goes well shortly... Cheers.

Get the cambelt and pump done anyway, time is as big a killer as mileage.

Agree. For the sake of 56 quid which is the price of the full kit (belt, tensioner, idler, pump & gaskets. It's worth doing, especially as you have the radiator off and coolant drained anyway. It's only a couple hour job.

i would say get over to totalmx5repair in southWales early one Saturday morning and do the whole lot just to be safe. if i ever have to buy another 5 these would be the things i would first without fail. and if you go to totalmx5repair you will be able to help do all the work even if you dont know how and your car will get a thorough look over! and it wont break the bank.
water pump redex treatment timing belt radiator coolant change all hoses and clamps rocker cover gasket new spark plugs leads fresh oil engine flush hand brake adjustment rust check underseal.
