Those autos are almost always in far better condition, shame in the last 2 years people have cottoned on to that and prices have started climbing As it's an Audi Bentley prestige automobile it should be slushbox anyway I've added up the costs and I can get a lot of the big parts (box, prop, ppf) very cheaply. Even so, there's a lot more involved in doing the swap than I'd remembered, so it may well stay auto for now to avoid putting too much time and money into it. Same with the front end ... it's easy to get the parts, but if I swap the front end I really have to respray the whole car and it's probably more than I want to get into right now ... so it might have to stay how it is for now Russell

One of the nice things about being stuck at home is being able to think things through a bit more ... Although it's a fair amount of work, I'll get a lot more out of the car with a manual gearbox, so I'll gather up the parts and do the swap
Also been thinking about the Rotrex supercharger kit ... I'd always liked them so jumped at the chance of getting one, but the reality is I'd only be fitting it temporarily until I can gather up the parts for an engine swap. And if I have thousands of pounds wrapped up in the kit, I can't afford to buy any engine swap parts! So decision made, and it's in the For Sale section.

Had a few hours on the car so started into the auto to manual swap ... most of the interior stuff is stripped out now, just need to get underneath and start getting the box and PPF out now Also started working towards my long term plans with the track car ... think I have engine choice narrowed down, and managed to get a 2nd hand Crapengineering tubular subframe Russell

Progress of sorts ... as part of my plan to get myself in a better place financially, I've been selling off as many of the spares that I've been hoarding as I can part with. Obviously the parts that people generally want are the same parts that I want to keep ... but needs must. So today I did a pretty sad road trip ... drove to my first stop and dropped my Rotrex supercharger kit off to the new owner, then on to the next stop and dropped my Nopro arches off, on to the next stop to drop off my Garage Vary bonnet and shorty bumper etc, etc. 7 stops, 7 tearful farewells. In with all of that, I picked up a nice 1.6 manifold and a set of standard pedals to help fix up my auto car ... then headed home. I've also managed to track down a Mazdaspeed wooden gear knob and some nicer V Special mats to help tidy the interior.
Next step is to crack into the auto to manual swap, I need to get the car up in the air to start stripping the gearbox out so hoping for better weather tomorrow. I still don't know what I'll do with the front end of the car, but something custom is probably on the cards. Aiming to keep the retro look, other than that I have no idea!
The track car is inching forward as well, the engine bay is completely stripped now, ready for a new coat of paint and then I can start putting the witing harness in

Been a mad few days ... made some really decent progress on my auto 'thing', removing the ppf and various wiring bits etc ready for pulling the auto gearbox out. I've managed to find most of the parts I'll need to fit a manual gearbox, and my 205 has at last been collected and is on it's way to the new owner. So much progress in such a short time is a bit unnerving, so I've bought a new project car to slow me down a bit ... sigh ... I can't even say 'it was cheap', but it's got lots of cool bits. It's got some damage but I'm hoping like crazy that the chassis is as solid as I think and that it's worth fixing up ... mainly because I've already bought some of the parts I'll need to fix it! The rough plan is to gather everything together and have a bit of a think as to which is the best one for me to keep as a road car, and then what's the best thing to do with the other car I've also found some wheels that will hopefully clear the brakes on the track car ... so tomorrow will be a bit of a road trip to collect the new car and a replacement door as well as the wheels and a few other bits to move all these projects forward. So much for clearing out the garage!! Russell

New car's here, gap on the drive filled so balance is restored!! It's a lot more tatty than I'd hoped, although at least that makes any decisions on which to keep very simple. The sills and arches are OK for now, but will need work before too long so the auto will get it's manual conversion along with all the best bits from both cars, and the front bumper off the black car once it's fixed. The black car will get put back to standard, or as close as I can get it ... it's a V Special so worth saving Got straight into some more automotive archaeology, trying to identify all the parts and which I want to keep, alongside digging loads of CDs and various bits of interesting / old / smelly rubbish out from under the seats! Rough list of the cool bits is KG Works speedo cover, rear view mirror and heater panel, Yokohama heater lever covers, Nielex tombstone, Dcuatro centre console cover, as yet unidentified handbrake sleeve and side repeaters, Zoom filler cap and Gallup (?) Wheels, and the T House Clubman front bumper. Also some Razo pedal covers and gear knob, and some oem chrome mirrors. Got straight into swapping the speedo dials around so the KG Works speedo can go into the auto I also managed to pick up some wheels, potentially for the track car. Panasport G7, in 16" so they'll clear the brakes but still pretty retro looking. I'm not sure on the exact size ... potentially 16 x 7.5 et around 30 Russell

Another one! I’m sure there’s a new addition every time I click the thread...
Looks a nice one. If you’re ever thinking of moving the Clubman bumper on, please do give me a shout.

Rob I have gone through a few recently, had a few that had hidden damage and rust so hoping that's all behind me with the auto. I'm hoping to keep it for a fair while but we'll see ... if I can sort myself out financially I do want to try something a bit older Russell

(&how much lighter are they?) Rich. It's early days, but I was quite inspired by V6s build ... It just popped up on Facebook, they're about 8kg lighter from memory, a significant amount anyway and along with a few other bits I'm changing should lead to a car that's a reasonable amount lighter than standard, and hopefully with a lot more power Russell

how long before you sell it all then Fair play for having a stab. i've still not been impressed by any V6 conversion (it does feel more like a nostalgia/noise thing than something done for outright performance) but there's no denying it's cool. I still reckon if i were to ever go the route of conversion it would probably be a honda (k20 or equiv) or one of the common GM crate engines (LS-the-world). Get that subframe unwrapped. let's see how it looks. Or would that be a bad idea in the garage of a thousand raindrops?

Get that subframe unwrapped. let's see how it looks. Or would that be a bad idea in the garage of a thousand raindrops? I'd thought that as well, but these seem like a better option than the K20/24 to me. There's a similar problem in both options with the height of the engine and the sump clearing the steering rack, but other than that they're essentially a pretty similar engine to fit into an MX5 in terms of the work you need to do. Weight wise, there's not much in it either. The K revs a bit better, although not by much ... but the J can get more power, more easily in NA form (which is all I'm interested in) and torque there's just no comparison. My base engine (which is a hybrid, not standard) should get me to about 270, and with some more tweaks I'd expect to get over 300 without spending much. From what I van tell 320 to 340 is very doable without getting carried away, although at that point it may be pushing the oem 6 speed / Torsen setup I have. There's also a tax on K engines that just isn't there with the J, a simple J30 which gives 240bhp as standard is £200, and all the swap parts are cheaper as well . I know the Kmiata kit is a lot better finished that the Minitec J swap kit but it's insane money and it's a bit unknown as to whether it works with RHD anyway. I think I can complete a J swap for about half the price of a K swap If Black Cat had done any work on progressing their K swap kit I'd have seriously considered it, but they seem to have stopped and got sidetracked with MR2s The LS swap is something I'd love to try, but the costs are just on another level. A complete kit is about £10,000 and a decent engine and box will set you back another £5,000, leaving you towards £20,000 once you've made the chassis alterations, sourced an LSD that will take the power etc. Saying that, 4-500bhp and the soundtrack must be something else!
