Looks like a big metal hand tickling its belly! I will never look at manifolds the same again. Once seen, can't be unseen. fk sake minty. thanks.

Undeniably Robocop touching up the Datsun. Do you live near Detroit?

A mere 700 miles away. I'm meant to be driving home enjoying exhaust noise right now, but something is busted on the car and it won't get over 30mph and seriously dumps fuel. Great.

They have no idea what's wrong with it. Pretty Canoeed off.

I'm thinking it's TPS related, as unplugging it lets the car at least start and idle, albeit it super rich. Timing is way out though, and won't even get close to where it should be.
The exhaust shop reckon it might be because the old exhaust had a manky old cat on it that was completely bunged up, and had been tuned against that. Now there's no blockage, the mixture is far too rich.
Unfortunately they don't have a exhaust meter here, hence the towing.

Sounds interesting if not annoying for you, keep us posted..

Hah yeah. Annoying is the word. Just dropped it off at the next garage, paid the tow truck man and I'm crossing my fingers it's something dumb and cheap, and not a "oh yeah, you need a new engine" kinda deal.

More thinking and reading whilst the garage has the car and I'm back at my desk.
The 280Z EFI system is SUPER primitive. There's a TPS, AFM and coolant sensor which are the only sensors used for determining the fuel injection (and the engine timing) - there's no O2 sensor. Then there's an ECU, which I happen to have a spare of.
The engine timing is way out, they couldn't even bring it close to 10°. So that's definitely a thing.
On top of that, some reading indicates that if either the TPS or coolant sensors go bad (or aren't plugged in correctly perhaps?) then the MEGASUPERLOTSOFPETROL symptoms that I'm seeing are likely to happen. So fingers crossed it's just something like that being messed up. The TPS and AFM sensors both have to be unplugged for removing the exhaust manifold. So I'm guessing one of them is at fault. I *think* I have a spare AFM, no idea about the TPS. Looks like I'll have to go trawl through my parts cache after work.
Once the car can actually drive again, I think I'll have the AFR sorted so it's running nice. Adjusting it is all done with a pair of screws and an external exhaust gas sensor, something the new garage can do.
I'll wait and see what "Ron" says. He wasn't actually at the garage when I dropped it off, but there was an absolute TON of JDM cars parked up, and a sorted looking Evo on the dyno.
On a side note, the exhaust looks AWESOME and sits exactly how I want, so at least I can just sit and look at it parked. I'm going away to a friend's cabin this Friday for the weekend, otherwise I'd be troubleshooting this myself.

Drumroll....
The results are in! The exhaust shop connected the coolant sensor to the wrong connector.
Looks like the super rich running has also fouled the plugs, but that's okay as I have a spare set to fit.
Get to pick it up this morning and I'll see about a video and some pictures.

we need photos of the exhaust, badly, lol. and sound. Yes, yes I know. It looks great - exactly what I wanted. We have a storm going over right now, so I'm going to wait until that passes and grab the car once it clears up. I'm heading up to a friend's cabin this weekend, so I should get a good run in then to see how it does for highway driving.
