Or bbc commentators, I think the sound was cut onto a wax disc during the flight.

Also interesting that as well as Wynford Vaughan Thomas who's narrating, there was a recording engineer aboard, minding the "portable" recorder cutting the sound straight onto 78rpm gramophone discs. www.orbem.co.uk/repwar/wr_recorders.htmAt 17:20 the skipper asks "Reg" if he's "still cutting". Since that's the only person on the recording who's called by name rather than by his position, I suppose it must be the recording engineer and "still cutting?" is asking if they're still being recorded. Quite likely the skipper wanted to remind the crew to mind their language when they're enthusing about the effects of the raid.

Well, yes, but it always depends on what people mean by "pollution". Making cement for concrete generates vast amounts of carbon dioxide which is a problem, but it's a different problem from nitrogen oxides and particulates in city air which a ULEZ is intended to tackle. Did you see that some 50mph speed restrictions on the M4 in south Wales seem to have worked in reducing NOX pollution and are to be made permanent? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-48723302

Absolutely amazing. I’m the 3rd generation of my family to be a pilot, the 1st wasn’t exactly popular with the Germans- he was in the RFC in WW1 flying stuff that was basically crochet out of string+canvas powered by an oil leak. He survived that & stayed in which then became the RAF & served at the beginning of WW2 before getting seconded out to single seat operational conversion units (a kind of advanced training). After the fall of Germany he went to Berlin & was involved with the airlift that kept the city going when the Eastern Bloc shut the access. Amazing Guy. The next generation did the standard RAF stuff; & the current generation are dull airline pilots.
