Re “Fake Facades”, in Valencia, Spain, they demolish the insides of old buildings, leaving just the exterior shell, they then rebuild the interior to modern standards, flats offices etc, whilst maintaining the external period features. Very cunning...

Very cunning... I really love the way they do this. I saw them do something similar in brussels. They effectively build a new skeleton to support the facade/outer wall.. and then knock down the existing building that is inside, floors and all. And then they put the new 'organs' in.. I'd love to see a timelapse of that.

The first case I knew of a façade being saved like that was Glasgow's Grosvenor hotel back in the '70s. It had the double misfortune to catch fire during the firemen's strike, so the blaze was tackled by squaddies driving Green Goddess engines. Anyway, only the 1850s façade survived but it was saved and the whole interior rebuilt within a few years.
