Took the bumper off last night to have a look and I'm not sure if I can fix it. The cross-member (the thing the radiator attaches to) is bent and where the sidelight sits has been completely crushed! Is the cross-member (if that's what it's called) something that bolts in? Good side Bad side The cross-member looks worse in real life! What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure it bolts onto the end of the chassis rails. Certainly looks like it form the pics.

From what I could make out it looks part of the chassis rails.

I think you might be right. I don't think that bit does much though. Maybe mounts for the side light/indicator unit? Get that wing and headlight unit off and you'll have a better understanding of what you've got to deal with. I have to be honest, if it was me I'd hack that end off with a grinder, slap on all the new panels and forget about it. I'm a bit cowboy sometimes though.

I think the sidelights actually attach to the bumper so that shouldn't be a problem. Biggest issue I might have is I think the wing is attached to something that's now been crushed!

Id cowboy it as well myself and hack it off. But as Nick says get the wing and bits off so you can have a proper look at it and go from there

The leg looks straight, square and ok from the pic`s,if it were me,i would try to pull it out as best as poss, cut off the worst bits like Horney said. Find one at a breakers, cut a repair panel more from the car in the breakers and trim it back so it fits perfectly, then weld the part back together. It`s all hidden behind the outer panels anyway,so a bit of paint once it`s all back together and job done. Don`t give up,anything can be fixed Have a look here for inspiration, www.mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=45260you will learn more about how it went together in the first place and have the satisfaction you repaired it yourself. Very best of luck to you.

That link is very helpful and from what I can make out the crossmember is welded on. How much does a cheap welding kit cost? This could be my way of learning how to weld! I have no knowledge at all when it comes to welding but I think the cheapest option is MIG?
Edit: Just remembered my garage is limited to 13amps, does this mean I wouldn't be able to use a welder in the garage?
