......member of Mighty5's to crash! I am absolutely gutted to be honest. Happened last night driving home from 6 a side footy. I was 4th in a line of cars just trundling along and the at the front just slammed on the brakes, the 2 cars in front of me were quite new and pretty much stopped on the button. My little 5 with no ABS had no chance! I'll put my hands up and say I was a little slow to react and just didn't expect it but even then I don't think I could have avoided it. Luckily the guy I hit is my mate and the car in front of him is my mate, unfortunately the guy that slammed his brakes on for no reason buggered off! They all said I was never going to stop that fast and the guy I hit has been very understanding to be fair to him. The only thing we can think of is that something ran out in front of him but neither the driver or the passenger in the 2nd car so anything. Anyway it's happened, I'm devastated and I'm not sure what to do next. I've never had an accident before! Do I claim on insurance, get another one? Do I claim and buy it back and fix it? Do I just fix it? Do I just buy another and break this one? I just don't know. The only positive is that my mate said not to worry about going through the insurance as his car just needs a new rear bumper but I'm worried it's going be more than that and then he'll have no choice but to go through my insurance. Just feel like crap to be honest

Argh no, gutted for you. Perhaps get the bumper and wing off and assess the damage. If it's just a light mech, wing, bumper and a bit of welding to the inner wing it shouldn't be too expensive and probably best done outside of the insurance (assuming your mates is straight forward). What's the rest of the car like condition/rust wise?
Tbh though, and not what you want to hear at this point, so why I'm adding it I'm not sure... and speaking as someone who has also run into the back of someone... there are really only two reasons to run into the back of someone who stops suddenly (whatever their reason), you're either not paying attention or are too close, even with someone trying to orchestrate a deliberate accident this is still true.

Would need a new bonnet as well and all though all that wouldn't be that much it's more the paint it would need afterwards that bumps up the price! Rust wise it's minimal and generally the paint is in good nick apart from the odd stonechip. I'm worried that what I get for it won't get me anything near as solid as my current one. Going to check my mates tomorrow.
You're right and it wasn't down to distance it was just momentary laps in concentration that cost me a lot. That's why I said I was a little slow to react, you're also right to say I don't need to hear it lol

Ouch!
The damage is nice and high though. Get that bumper and wing off and post some more pics. I reckon a used wing and bumper would have you back on the road again.

To get back on the road I would need bumper, bonnet, wing, headlamp, sidelight, headlight casing and headlight lid. But currently I don't know if everything is straight!
Will have a proper look this weekend.

If you can find someone with a red breaker it may not need paint. Would be a shame to scrap it with all.the work you've put in...

I've got sidelights, headlight casing and lid in red. Let me know if you're going to fix it, you csn have the bits for a drink Ron @ the flockshop should have a headlight, or I may have one lying around in the shed.

I reckon avoiding the insurance would be your best option rhyswh. Excess, increased premium, and the monumental pain in the rear canoe factor of having to remember the exact details to declare when getting insurance cover for the next 5 years (I think). Some used parts and some help from friends & forum members, and you'll get it sorted. Try to take something positive from it too & put it down to experience - always give yourself plenty of room in front! That distance is directly proportional to you being able to avoid the majority of incidents/accidents on the road. Reduce the distance and you reduce your opportunity to react and keep yourself safe. If I had a thumbs up icon I'd use it but there isn't one so you'll have to make do with a pirate

Very generous of everyone! I wouldn't want anyone else out of pocket for my mistake though. I just remembered I have a set of sidelights spare!
I know it will be a pain in the rear canoe with insurance and I'll take hit on the premium but my car is no where near the classic red it used to be! Having red parts from different cars would definitely stand out so would still need paint.
Really greatful for the offers though guys!

Proper prarrie canoeter, sorry to see. Been there done that a few times over the years. So know the feeling.
I'd echo the above, avoid insurance at all costs if you can. If it's a solid car and you like it, then fix it with a little help from your friends (best option if you ask me). Worst case break it and buy another with the proceeds.

Gutted for you but at least your mates are being understanding about it. Probably give you some grief for it in the future if they are like mine.
If you need a hand with anything then I think I'm down the road, on the glos wilts border.
Oh and will check my parts bin when I can and see if I have a headlight in there, or any other small bits.
