Touge is the spirit of the chase on a wild winding road with two cars. It means "wild road" or "mountain pass".
So 2 cars.. Rear car isn't there to overtake the front car, just to try and keep up. Front car is there to try and get away. It's not really a race. Timing is optional. "Winning" doesn't mean that much just means you were faster. Both drivers discover something about themselves, their cars and the road.
Why the mx5 and the ae86 are considered great at it is that they have the spirit of driving imbued through "enough" power and "handling" and cheapness (where the mx5 wins most).
You can imagine that the hot hatches of Europe and Japan are also great Touge cars.
In Japan it kinda turned into the drift scene but the real core spirit was Touge.
