As much as I love the MX5, part of me had been wanting another car for a while. Either more 90s Japanese goodness in the form of an FC RX7, or something older and simpler as I'd never had the chance to work on something with carbs and the like. Unfortunately with the price of hardtop FCs going up (Thanks Hoonigan), it started to seem more like the latter was the more viable option (for now...). Like when I started looking at MX5s, it came down to a number of criteria the car had to meet: Reasonable purchase and running costs Easy(ish) to work on Available parts Something a bit odd and generally unloved I went through a number of different ideas, primarily Fiat 126s, Volvo 340s, Trabants or a VAZ 2101. A number of affordable ones of each came and went whilst saving, and then this one came up. Thankfully the previous owner was able to deliver the car, super helpful due to the lack of registration and brakes. Probably could've waited and got a better condition one for a similar price, however I fell for it as soon as I saw it, probably primarily for the mechanical noises everything makes, especially the doors. The plan is to get it roadworthy and then UK registered ASAP, then worry about the appearance where the plan is to try and keep it primarily period correct, but modified (obviously). Made a work list and spent the last week doing the easy stuff, replacing old cracked hoses and frayed wiring, however it will need some fairly invasive surgery on the passenger side floor, thankfully new panels are less than £30 a piece!

Super lack of posting on my behalf, ups and downs, life goes on, at least there's cars.
Quite a lot done on the Lada, apart from actually getting it fixed.
After scraping all the sound proofing off the floor, turns out that was structural, looked more like the Flintstones car. Was preoccupied with other stuff for a long time, now moved away for work. So progress is slow. As she currently sits, I'm stripping the car to get the floor welded back up. I've got a brand new whole front floor, new chassis legs and more to get welded in, best thing about these cars is the dirt cheap price of parts. Pulled the entire wiring loom, all the interior and dash. Spent last weekend pulling the gearbox, only thing left now is to fit a new handbrake cable and pull the engine. Oh and remove all the glass, then she's going on a trailer to be made whole again. I'll try and keep posting more again now, and get some more pictures up!

Quick update, she's looking a little sorry for herself. Got the engine out boxing day (would've done it Christmas day, but got told I'd get shot...), finished stripping the front end down. Only job left to do now is to remove all the glass, then she can go off for invasive surgery! Attachments:

friends of mine used to rally one of these in the challenge when they were new (early '80s??), think 1300cc? remember them saying (of lada's) beware of the steering-box ripping from the innerwing otherwise they enjoyed driving "flat-out everywhere" as they needed to carry as much speed as possible due to the low powered 1300 engine following with intrest... Rich.

This is quite an unusual sight in UK. Where I come from this was almost one and only car available. I like it's classic boxy design. The more time passes the better it gets. Fun fact, my father had a NEW company Lada back in 2006 (yep they were still making these!) and it got so rusty in 5 years, that you could put a fist in a fender. What a lovely Russian quality. On a side note - Those oldschool Lada VFTS bodied race cars are awesome. All the best in resurecting this one!

Rich. Awesome, you got any pictures? Yep, there's quite a few bracing options available to reinforce the chassis leg where they mount, hope (as I've got two new chassis legs to go in) this shouldn't be a problem, but will probably still get a brace anyway! Definitely need to be going flat out everywhere, as mines the even less powerful 1200! Hopefully plans in the future to build a slightly more interesting motor (think 1600 with twins ) This is quite an unusual sight in UK. Where I come from this was almost one and only car available. Yep, if it was registered it'd be 1 of 13 in the UK (last I checked!), crazy considering how many were built across 2101 - 2107! Think the Zhiguli's Fiat roots definitely mean it's aged better (in my opinion) than the Riva something about big round headlights Haha, that doesn't surprise me, hear lots of interesting tales along those lines whenever I chat to anyone about it! That must've been one of the very last 2106's then surely?! Hell of a production run! Absolutely love the VFTSs, some crazy 16v ones made back in the day too! Favourite has to be Stasys Brundza's 1600R, if only someone made the arches for them...

Also, unfortunately not a lot of progress since taking the engine out. The contents of the car has been sorted in a lot of plastic boxes hopefully making it a slightly less confusing jigsaw when the chassis has been welded, which brings me to my next point...
Person who I'd lined up to weld it unfortunately can't do it at the moment, so currently back on the hunt for a reputable garage to chop the floor and chassis legs out. If anyone knows of anywhere (ideally close to the East Midlands!) let me know!
Cheers, James

I'll have a chat with Vince & Lance sometime about their Lada rally experiences, Vince was the navigator & his brother Lance drove I know theres a few photo's and as they run a garage, it was sponsored (Mosley's garage & rolling Road. were near LLandeilo but now moved to LLangadog) anyway, if you think ownership of a Lada is silly, my mrs. made her first mistake of 2019 on January 1st when she bought a Zaz 966 sight-unseen from somewhere in Lithuania Rich.
