Zed, you are like a walking Haynes manual / crazy scientist / bored mechanic. Mostly over my head but impressive skills.

So, I'm officially a hoarder..... well, you cannot keep too many 'odd' parts & early '5 panels are rare(ish) and specific to the early cars so...... after I'd chopped this from the dead 1989 car I realised I should have cut further back & saved the bulkhead / screen pillars as they can rot as wel as allowing me a 'buck' to use for fabricating some parts on... oh well.. Rich.

Do you mean the single-hole slam panels? Or were there other unique panels on early cars?? My screen pillars are rusty - got them done but picked it up in the dark while it was raining, so you can guess the rest...

the oldest of these cars are 31 years old now, my pair are '90 & '91 so not new theres slight diferences in the panels, most obvious is the 'slam-panel' but early cars had a diferent bulkhead (wiper motor mount is the most obvious - motor points towards middle of car on early / pre 'sept 1990?) but they were constantly updated... even doors were altered with crash-resistance 'door-bars' added sometime 1991? (could be later though ) one good upgrade is a rear bulkhead strengthener from a mk2/2.5, this ias a factroy 'add-on' part that straddles the transmission tunnel & rear bulkhead around the area where the fuel-flap / boot opening levers are (strengthens this area & easily 'retro-fitted' ) then theres the subframe braces (& diferent subframes to suit during the production) also I believe the realy early cars had stiffer suspension springs & anti-roll bars but these were softened to please buyers (who wanted comfort not sporty handling) the earliest cars were somewhat lighter also, not just related to the later cabin & suspension braces... Rich.

so, brought '50 shades' home this morning it's been in my unit for a few months partly as I needed the space at home & partly to do some fiddlin in the dry... action-shot because.... 2K rpm @ 30mph...... anyway, back to engine stuff... the B6 cylinderblock will be having a soak in a caustic solution to remove the baked-on gack (oil & 'mud' in the coolant jacket) so I decided to remove the cylinderhead's 'oil-restrictor' to allow better cleaning.... I was unsure if this was just a restriction (small hole!) or a 'check-valve' to stop the hydraulic tappets draining-back - although anyone with an earlier 'hydro' engine will know they rattle on first start if left a little while so I should have guessed drilled out 6.5mm. then discovered it was just a restrictor (should have measured the bore...) run an 'M8' tap through it & drew the remains out. so, on reassembly I must remember to make & re-fit a restrictor (otherwise there'll be too much oil in the cam area - probable smoking due to valve-stem oilseal's being drowned and maybe breateher issues? ) and also this helps with oil availability at the crankshaft especially with the under-piston 'oil squirters'. anyway, next job is make a caustic-bath... Rich.

managed some productive fiddlin today, started 'adjusting' the TonyLaw Vauxhall 1.6XE mnifold to fit the Mazda B6 cylinderhead so, as the Vauxhall engine had similar port-spacing to the B6 it was a case of elongating some of the existing manifold / cylinderhead studholes & drilling 3 new ones to fit. why this modify this manifold as opposed to an 'off the shelf' item? the available manifolds are aimed towards road use so their designs are a compromise, this manifold is made of a larger bore pipe (both primary & secondary) and has longer primary pipes (~26-27") so suits a high revving engine - like what I'm hoping my Mazda/Honda hybrid engine will be next job is to alter the shape of the primary pipes as they currently point towards the passanger side enginemount (also being re-made) and suspension crossmember so they need to aim rearwards by around 30* will fill them with sand to lessen the chance of the pipe collapsing then heat before gently bending.... more to come Rich.

The Mad Scientist missed a trick when he cut up the orange car. How handy would the complete front end be for this Exhausting project !!!!!!! Subframe with skeleton block and gearbox to check the fit of everything.
