Just got back from another decent drive. This time I avoided all the slow little lanes and bumps. I was on a lot of fast A roads, swift exits at roundabouts, a touch of motorway and more fast back country roads. It was relatively warm, bright and dry today. So I managed some good launches: 50% in first, 100% in all the following gears. Great FUN
Almost starting to feel closer to normal now and it's only my third actual run and second proper blat.
Had a toy and quick chat with someone running a 400bhp turbo ford orion of all things. His on boost acceleration was a fraction faster although I wasn't in a very low gear / high revs at the time. My top end was higher. His was bogging down and spewing dark clouds so I hope it was ok. All on a long private road of course.
Wonder if I need a six speed box to handle a cheeky 100 shot of Nitrous?

What was it you said about not wanting to 'charge it? 500bhp did you say? lol Orion sounds awesome, love a fast Ford

It's a slippery slope. Going from "This is intimidating" to... "I've got this". I saw a GTR screaming along today going in the opposite direction. There's always someone faster!
ps
I just looked up the weight of those orions... only 895kg for the 1.6! No wonder it was quick ha. That's at least 600kg less than a modern equivalent compact modern family car. 400bhp in an orion is ballpark 600bhp in a modern fat golf in power to weight terms. Torque adds more complexity, but we can forget that for simplicity.

But FWD... lol I think you may re-evaluate any potential need for more power the day it rains heavily and unexpectedly...

That's when you want a V6 TT GTR engine and AWD system in a mk1

I took out Wayne from Blackwell Sportscars today. He was impressed saying "I could drive this all day" I should have some videos sent over shortly. Although if my number plate is on show they won't be going online.

Hmmm, are you still using the mx5 5-speed?

Hmmm, are you still using the mx5 5-speed? Well, until it explodes into a thousand pieces halfway through a full-bore lunge through third... LOL

I haven't used fourth very hard yet. The numbers you see in just third are high enough. The never ending lunge to the horizon eats up road and numbers very quickly. There simply isn't the space around to use fourth properly. So my fun is mainly done in second & third. I suspect unless I visit an autobahn that fourth and fifth will only ever be my cruising gears when I am chilling and trying to stick to the motorway speed limits on a long journey.

As it was with primer
Then sanded down and smoothed on both sides
Moulded to the car bonnet exactly (filling in half a mm gap all around). The black vinyl stops any mess going on the paintwork
Removed with smooth contact surface but untrimmed rough edge still
Next... More edge sanding, fine filler, sanding, final primer....

Just one more round of tweaks and it's ready for pro painting

My idle was a bit high today. Hybrid suggested checking the cable linkage end stops before popping over there. A mission for tomorrow.
The car was good fun again today in the midrange thrust. The second / third gear pulls are a LOT of fun, when the road conditions open up. Always a suprise when you get to use it all
We did some checking of engine codes and it turns out the 50k mile engine is in the car. The spare one for sale is therefore the lower mile 45k example. Paperwork updated.

So after the run out today... it is Canoing terrifying on absolute-full-chat off a roundabout and through second, third, fourth... lol Probably more to do with not being the driver and therefore not being in control as obstacles are coming up, and the imaginary brake pedal not working lol, but cold tarmac and a slathering of salt certainly does not help reduce fear haha Confidence comes with time and practice, of which I have had not enough of either! and my confidence is already low re: powering out of corners after my unintentional spin the other winter... (which was totally due to ice because it was grip..NOTHING in a second, but that knowledge doesn't help... haha) I know I am noob to this sort of power (and RWD generally) but I honestly don't know how you could use more power/acceleration on the public road in any car. We've pretty much decided it's no longer really a car for tiny country lanes, as narrow roads, mud, damp shadows, a mountain of torque, and the ability to arrive at a corner or obstacle 30mph faster than suitable or planned and having nowhere to escape to if you need to, all make it a beast that is hard to exploit confidently. Anything more than second gear is basically redundant on that sort of road. Big sweeping A-/B-roads and dual carriageways feel more its home now - if for no other reason than you have room to play with if things get unexpectedly out of hand, and other traffic speeds are generally higher so there is a lower speed differential. I still like it a lot, though It has a load of character and it buzzes with feeling at all speeds. What feels like rear wheel wobble or the diff doing something weird at 120+ (kph, of course) is disconcerting, but it's more than likely just my rear canoe-dyno not being calibrated properly, lol, and you can't really spend much time up at that speed, even if it feels totally at home doing it! If the idle thing can be sorted (don't forget to let them know about how it also drops to below 1krpm at points!) then hopefully some track time beckons

I was about ten times more concerned being a passenger at half the speed. So I can only imagine you liked the full bore 2/3 run
Yep... on tight country lanes filled with bumps, slow corners, grime... I'd happily swap seats into a basic 1.6 on soft suspension. Then when the road widens and traffic clears, I'd happily be back in mine... engage warp drive for the sheer daft giggles and wow factor. Empty NSL roads littered with a few chicanes (roundabouts) is supreme fun. Corner, mash second, hang on, snatch third, ride a mega wave of thrust, etc. In those moments it all makes sense. It's a thrilling high. The hangover comes later, when stuck in traffic with a grumbling engine being nursed along.
