Yeah, I have been looking around. I think I want another petrol over gas (we have an underslung gas tank, so could do that). Have looked at eberspächer, webasto and Chinese.
Not touching a Chinese knock off for something that will burn petrol directly under our sleeping bodies... Eberspächer seem to be much more expensive than webasto (for functionally something very similar).
Thinking about bringing it back to the UK and getting it done professionally as I am not sure I trust myself to do it properly. Getting it done here would be financial suicide.
Perhaps I will bite the bullet and do it myself, as it will be quicker. Just worried about the MOT equivalent here. They seem to have many many rules - but then anybody fitting in the UK might still not conform to them either.

Did my first mod/fix today... The instrument cluster was woefully under-lit, and the little clock didn't work. So I took the cluster out and found an absolute disaster... The plastics were completely Canoeed. I tried to find a replacement, but they are very few around and all seem to be in a similar state. If anybody has any tips for second hand parts/breakers, please let me know. All those bits on the desk go together... Looks like it has had a new Speedo at some point. Looks brand new. But the rest of the plastics (where that was fixed to the main body) were buggered. And the other dial was literally in pieces. The backing plate was broken up completely. I put all the bits together with super glue, and used some powdered plastic in the glue to stiffen it all up. Worked very well. Then I put it all back together and replaced the pathetic lights with led versions. Next job was to fix the futuristic LCD clock. You can buy replacement panels for them, so took that apart and put the new one in. And it bloody works! I got all the parts from campervanculture.com, which I can definitely recommend. Have some more things coming from them as well. You can buy completely new circuit boards for the back of the dash for if/when they fail. Which may be not to far on the future. And you can get plans backed dials too!

Rich.

Rich. I've seen somebody who had fitted a Passat cluster... But I prefer the original look... Got my eye on these - replaced the flimsy crap, and backlit dials: campervanculture.com/shop/vw-t25-t3-vanagon-dash-pod-cluster-master-repair-kit/campervanculture.com/shop/t3-gauge-upgrade-kits-2/It was just so brittle. It just fell apart as I looked at it. Cheers - Let me know if you hear of anything. They seem to be a bit pricey though...

I also removed the old erbersprächer heater ready for a new one.
I found a garage that I think I can trust to fit it. I will do a lot of the prep work myself so I can reduce the 145chf an hour rates to a minimum...
Going to try to reuse the old box so it looks as original as possible. Will get some pictures up as I didn't take any when doing it... I think it will be quite a neat installation in the end.

The heater box sits under the van and has been very good, until it failed in -10 weather. So we were a bit annoyed. It has been as good as gold since, but we haven't tried to use it is such cold conditions... I have read that it could just be a temp sensor, or it could be due to altitude and it getting coked up. But I don't want to spend ages trying to fix it when parts are so hard to come by. So, we decided to replace it with a new one, and local prices were stupid. £3k fitted. ffs. So i have bought one from the UK, and am getting it fitted here (i want to make sure it won't get picked up on the next MOT equivalent, so if i can point to a receipt to show it was fitted professionally, it will be a lot easier). I am doing some of the prep work to keep the cost down, and this involves taking the existing heating out and (as suggested by the guy here) reusing the old box to at least make it look original... So this is the box (split in two - one half on the floor): It is a bit scabby, but given it is 33 years old, it is in ridiculously good condition. I am stipping it down and repainting it ready to put the new heater in. THis is the old internals: Again, it all looks in very good condition given the age... and this is what will be replacing it: It should fit nicely in the old box, and i can use the existing blower outlet inside the van to avoid cutting new holes in the seat base. The only clue that it is new will be the digital controller - and the fact that it will work in cold weather.... Will get some more pics up once it is all cleaned up.

And here it is all derusted, and painted up. Heater arrives on Friday. Unfortunately the garage can't look at it until mid march. I want to do it myself, but my wife doesn't trust my abilities with a thing that is going to burn petrol all night while we sleep above it. Fair enough...

New heater was fitted just before the world turned to prarrie canoe. So, we have working heating, but have never used it. This weekend we went out for a drive, just to give it a run (don't panic, we are allowed to do that here) drove it up a hill, went for a walk, came back and the bastard thing wouldn't start Long story short, it was the same problem as before. So today I took the tank out and it was full of rust and orange sealant. I don't understand what it was doing there. The level sender had the sealant all over the seat but there were big sheets of it outside the tank. Confused. But i have ordered a new tank and all sorts of houses and stuff. Let's see how long it will take to get here.

The outside wasn't too bad - it has been undersealed very well. The inside was mostly very clean. I was hopeful I could just clean it out all the sealant out, but as you look around inside there were some big rust areas. But with the hassle of cleaning and having a crappy tank at the end of it, when £71.76 will buy you a new one...
I just don't understand how all that orange crap got inside it
