Let us imagine that a friend's front wing has rotted through at the bottom, exposing a view through the hole of what said friend assumes is a structural part of the chassis, i.e. towards the back of the wing and sort of vertically underneath where the windscreen pillars meet the body, the sort of thing that the sills might attach to... (Random images taken from www.jdmbits.com/2013/03/mazda-mx5-miata-ccr-arrow-side-brace.html ) Would some pretty substantial rust on that circled part be, er, an issue at MOT time? If so, would covering the hole with Gaffa tape to prevent casual viewing be sufficient to avoid it being noticed/inspected and, hence, avoid that issue? Asking for a friend, obvs...

Let us imagine that a friend's front wing has rotted through at the bottom hummmmmm.. would this be a close friend?? multiple personality maybe? If so, would covering the hole with Gaffa tape to prevent casual viewing be sufficient to avoid it being noticed/inspected and, hence, avoid that issue? probably Asking for a friend, obvs... is this friend named Kevin Wendell Crumb by chance? might want to watch the film 'Split' Rich.

Thanks for the reply! I am concerned it is going to fail, and that it's going to cost ££££ to get sorted - which I really don't have to hand right now... I could technically try to do a sill replacement on my driveway now I have one, Bilbo style - but it's on a 20-30 degree slope so can't use ramps or a jack, I have zero prior experience, and I'm dangerous with tools...

What's that Top Gear saying? How hard can it be? I dread to think how badly I'd bodge it if I tried myself as I'm sure there's going to be epic rust elsewhere that will appear once things are taken off... so I am going to have to make enquiries about repairs that are decent quality but with finishing that is just serviceable rather than pretty, given the state of the rest of the car... lol

Put it in for the MOT and find out? It's going to be off the road while you sort it out anyway, whether that's before or after...

Hello wannabe. Fret not! I am a British Standards qualified Coded welder in all welding formats.
This is what you do. As in all welding works the time consumed is in the preparation of the job. If you prepare the areas to be welded by cutting the old metal out right back to good solid non corroded metal and then cut the new metal to fit properly the welding job then becomes a very simple one for the welder. I don’t know where you are but if you are near Bexhill on Sea I will be happy to help you.
The cost of welding is not where the money goes. It’s what I suggest that you do.
Regards. Rich.

Hello Zed. Yes that’s me 😀
I qualified from the welding Institute in 1992 at the Lancing college of welding. I then became a member of the welding institute.
Mixed gasses, MMA. mig and Tig. The hardest test was … the milk marketing board test. Ultra difficult test.
As with all the tests back then you only got one shot at it. It took me 9 months to get all my qualifications.
I have damaged my eyes somewhat from years of welding. I ended up with two shade 12 lenses back to back in my welding mask, I now suffer from bright light blindness … 🤦♂️
I still have some of my welding sets but only weld a couple of times a year now, for myself. I have been involved with some monumental welding project way back in the 1990’s
Regards. Rich.

Link to the Milk Test info! mighty5s.com/post/53183/threadSounds epically difficult! I am, er, far from the sea but thank you very much for the awesome offer! I am not quite sure how I'm going to get it sorted but it might be a trip to The MX5 Restorer as he does MOTs, therefore I can 'legally' drive there for one and then get the remediation work done... Not looking super cheap. £500 for a front section / outer sill replacement as indicated, I think? But they guarantee repairs for MOT passes for 3 years, which seems good. I like to think I could cut out rust with an angle grinder thing / cutting wheel? and then match the shape of the cut-out with cardboard and transfer it to a replacement part for welding together, but rust protection? prep? keeping it all in shape? I am not confident... lol

£500 for a front section / outer sill replacement as indicated, I think? sounds about right.... they guarantee repairs for MOT passes for 3 years, which seems good. 3 years? not great is it? the repair should last a little longer than 3 years (guessing thats all the cover refers to?) I like to think I could cut out rust with an angle grinder thing / cutting wheel? and then match the shape of the cut-out with cardboard and transfer it to a replacement part for welding together, but rust protection? prep? keeping it all in shape? I am not confident... lol actually better overlapping the new on old before cutting, tecscrews / self-tapping screws wirk wonders for positioning * alignment. - hacksaw blade works wonders for harder to access (ie. grinder access) and a belt-sander / powerfile or real file also good for trimming.... Rich.
